Vegas Pro 14? Maybe

How have sales on Catalyst been going? I can't say that I know a single person who uses it or has any intention to use it. Perhaps a tanked Catalyst will give incentive to invest in a proven product like Vegas. But it sure could use it hidden guts ripped out and modernized.

It crashed a lot when I tried it and wouldn't do some really important basic things like photo animation and VST audio support. My trial ran out so I gave up.

The Catalyst seems to focus itself mainly to Sony cameras like the FS5 or FS7. Even if there are tricks how I can edit my GH4/Shogun footage also with a PC (you have to convert the ProRes 10bit 422 footage with tools like TMPGenc to H.264 with 10bit 422 what is possible with high profiles).

But the situation with Vegas is not better here too, since UHD ProRes files are decoded with the wrong luma but also tend to crash Vegas.

However, playback of UHD XAVC footage from a FS7 tends to be stronger in Edit then in Vegas today.

+1 laurence. not so much crashing but sadly lacking anything of use.

@wolfgang - why not record dnxhd / hr?
Wolfgang S. wrote on 4/12/2016, 3:56 AM
The DNxHR recorded by the Shogun cannot be imported in the Catalyst. At least as far as I know. Maybe I should give that another try and test it.

And for Vegas the decoder shows an even weaker preview performance, compard to ProRes.

There's also the very real issue of VR, which goes beyond the Stereo 3D engine currently found in Vegas Pro, and which Adobe is tackling head-on:

I'm headed to NAB this year after skipping several years. I'll be camera shopping and looking for a Vegas replacement when we eventually adopt 4k.

I'd love to see a new version of Vegas that supports 4k. I have Adobe CC and re-evaluate Premiere with each new release. I've also tried Resolve, Catalyst, and FCPX. Each app has significant strengths but their workflows are significantly less efficient vs. Vegas for the short form corporate work that I do.

Keep us posted about Vegas @ NAB, Guy S..

The prospect of a Vegas Pro 14 release brings about a great deal of concern for me personally..
If indeed this potentially emotional moment occurred , I would not have anything else in my life to anticipate and I would have to continue learning version 13 with the knowledge of knowing I may never master the software I have spent a significant portion of my life trying to figure out how to use correctly.
It just ain't fair.
I want an apology for all this stress.. Lol
I can't wait to see what a new version can offer..
Same pot of stew, just reheated.

FPP - Don't worry, I've been trying to master Vegas since Version 3 !
Wolfgang S. wrote on 4/15/2016, 3:42 AM
@ FPP - for me it is since version 4 where I have tried to master Vegas. ;)
Was a lot of time investment, and for sure I would like to continue to use Vegas.

@ Guy S.,
I work with Vegas also for 4K/UHD - and I use the GH4/Shogun ProRes v-log l footage at the moment. I have also tested Vegas for FS7 XAVC footage, where you have to grade s-log 3 footage.

I think both can be done in Vegas - even if I have to state that for ProRes I transcode my footage with external Tools to Cineform to maintain a 10bit workflow also in Vegas. XAVC can be edited in Vegas with UHD too - and especially for FS7 s-log3 footage I really love the Catalyst prepare.

So I do not know what kind of footage you wish to edit, but there are solutions for Vegas too. Even if it could be easier, and even if I see that Vegas tends to show lower performance compared with newer NLEs like Catalyste Edit or even Edius. But since I love Vegas I wish to continue with Vegas - at least at the moment.

Hi Wolfgang,

out of interest what do you use for the ciniform transform out of interest.

thanks!

I use TMPGenc Video Mastering Works 6 to transcode the Shogun 10bit 422 footage.

http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/de/product/tvmw6.html

I would have loved to use Catalyst Prepare - but unfotunately it does not support ProRes in the Windows world. :(

TMPGenc maintains the 10bit - and I see another possible workflow: transcode the ProRes 10bit 422 to H.264 10bit 422 (yes, that is supported) and grade that in Catalyst Prepare. And render it for XAVC (for 10bit) and edit that in Vegas. The Cineform codec is an older one, but shows a better playback performance then XAVC in Vegas.

One of my colleagues that just experienced the VP13 unresolved green P2 bug during a recent edit had plans to hit the SCS booth this week. I haven't heard from him yet.

FWIW the director of a short I will be shooting in June is at NAB, I asked him to swing by Sony stand and try and get an answer re Vegas Pro future, don't know if he'll remember. Perhaps if a whole bunch of people who know someone at NAB asks them all to swing by the stand and inquire maybe someone will get an answer? Maybe a bunch of interest might get Sony moving on doing something?

Out of curiosity I just checked SCS on Facebook and Twitter - last posts March 8. Youtube - one year ago. Communication not their strong suit, eh?

I am not sure how small the web team is but maybe it was Peter that posted on FB too.
The web marketing interactions seem to be almost abandoned.

could we have multiple timelines and nesting of timelines, i use 3 screens and have 2 or 3 Vegas apps open most of the time to move between projects. Also has anyone ever gotten the export to AVID to work or to aftereffects ( messy for sure)
This app needs help, don't get me wrong i like it a lot it use to be my edit weapon of choice but the last year or so i see myself working less in Vegas and more in the other editing apps.

I actually use the After Effect Export all the time. Works great!. Ironically, Because I have a non-CC version of After effects I actually have to go through Vegas to get from Prem CC to AE. . I use the Final Cut XML with Resolve all the time too. Maybe the issue is with AE-cc, which wouldn't be surprising..
