Vegas Pro 16 stuttery playback

I have a 1080p mp4 video in the timeline. In the video I am speaking to camera with a green screen in the background so 1 video track and 1 audio track. As soon as I add chroma keying to the video track playback goes all stuttery, a bit like the audio is out of sync with the video. It isn't actually because when I render the clip(s) they play ok. However it is a very unpleasant editing experience, what can I do to fix this problem?
BTW I have a 2020 pc with intel i9 chip and 32gb ram.

Lower the preview quality.

Importantly, what is your graphics card? If NVidia, what driver do you have installed? Many on this forum recommend the Studio driver. If AMD, AMD is not fully supported in VP16 as is NVidia. AMD support was added very recenty in VP17 build 421, and I am now getting much much better timeline performance with this build (AMD RX470 card), though not necessarily in the highest preview quality as j-v points out.

I thought AMD graphics was fully supported in VP16 but no so (except when exporting) until recent update in VP17?

Did you install the best driver for this card ? The Studio Nvidiadriver nr. 442.19
