Vegas Pro 17 failing to render after hardware upgrade

Umbrailism wrote on 7/4/2023, 8:50 PM

Hi all!

I've been using Vegas Pro 17 for a few years now. I've usually had no issue rendering videos whatsoever, however I recently upgraded my processor, motherboard, memory, and power supply. Now, whenever I start Vegas Pro, I get an FL Studio ASIO error saying "Error: Failed activating render device! Code: -2004287484". The software still works fine, I think, but when I go to render my project it immediately crashes with an Unknown Exception. What should I do? I've tried reinstalling Vegas Pro 17 but that hasn't worked. Some info is below:

Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 7700, upgraded from an Intel Core i5-8400

Motherboard:  MSI PRO B650M-A, upgraded from an ASUS PRIME H310-E

GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3050

OS: Windows 10 Home, Version 22H2

Any help would be appreciated!

@Umbrailism Hi, check your GPU driver is up to date, Vegas has Help - Check drivers but I use Nvidia Geforce for my RTX https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce/geforce-experience/

Try rendering half your project to see if you can narrow it down to a dodgy file on the timeline, or try render another piece of media,

PS. --

The latest Ryzen 7 7700X chip also features RDNA 2 integrated graphics architecture, meaning that you won't need a graphics card to get your system up and running

You can turn off the GPU in Preferences then try render with one of the options without (NVENC) at the end, that will tell you if it's a Graphics card problem.

FL studio, "Fruity Loops" ...

Did they supply an ASIO driver?

Is that driver selected as the output driver of Vegas? Is there any further output about the unknown exception?

Thanks for the advice! I feel I need to clarify a few things. First off, this isn't any dodgy media or file in particular, it's literally anything I try and render. If I make a new project, drop something like text or a pattern into the project and try to render it, it crashes. It's not a place in a project, it is quite literally every single time I try to render absolutely anything. My second point is because of this, I can't get to the screen with the render templates on, so I'm unable to test out your suggestion of rendering without using NVENC.

Have you done a full reset of VEGAS?

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-reset-vegas-pro-to-default-settings--104646/

I just tried this again, and I still get the same error on launch, even after launching after resetting all the settings.

Yeah, I'm not really sure. I know Vegas Pro uses some sort of ASIO driver, although I think I uninstalled it a while ago as it was conflicting with something. Even then, it continued to work fine, it's specifically after this hardware swap that things have broken. If it's worth anything, "FL Studio 20" and "FL Studio ASIO" are showing as installed in the control panel.

Anyone got anymore advice on this? It'd really be appreciated!

Did you already change your used Audio Device to another one in Preferences/Audio Device?

What am I changing exactly? So far I've changed the "audio device type" from Microsoft Sound Mapper, to Windows Classic Wave Driver, Realtek ASIO, and Direct Sound Surround Mapper, none of which fixed the immediate crashing when I click Render As.

"failed activating render device" tells me that your GPU is not activating properly. Since your CPU is the only thing you changed that contains a GPU (your CPU has an integrated GPU), I suggest making sure you have the latest AMD enterprise driver installed for your GPU. Then make sure you have the latest Nvidia studio driver installed for your dedicated RTX GPU. Reboot after installing both, and try again.

Systems:

Desktop

AMD Ryzen 7 1800x 8 core 16 thread at stock speed

64GB 3000mhz DDR4

Geforce RTX 3090

Windows 10

Laptop:

ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo 32GB (9980HK CPU, RTX 2060 GPU, dual 4K touch screens, main one OLED HDR)

I've just done this, and I still can't render anything, let alone get to the templates section. Although, Vegas now takes exclusive control of my audio devices when I focus its window, so if anything I just made it worse lmao. Any other ideas?

Adding to this, I turned off "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" on my main audio device (Realtek HD Audio), and now Vegas Pro crashes immediately once the main window opens. However, this only happens when the audio device type is set to Realtek ASIO - when I set it back to Microsoft Sound Mapper or presumably anything else, the crash doesn't occur on startup.
