@dave-k does it still crash if you use the option with (NVIDIA) at the end & the profile at the default Main?

If you've got a file that you could share on Google Drive, i'm sure people would be happy to try it & help illuminate that from the problem?

@dave-k Hi I know this won't be any help but just to let you know i tried your project & render settings, & just to show they work ok i had no problems but i thought i'd share the Taskmanager screen shots to show what it does to my CPU & GPU.

It crashed again with these settings. We have another sermon in the morning that I need to download and render. I'll upload it so that we're using the most-current file. Again, I've been doing the same download and rendering task with Vegas Pro for the last 2 years with no issues until recently. I hope someone might be able to find the root cause. Thank you!

Under preferences, file io try switching hardware decoder to auto or Intel QSV if that's an option. NVDEC can have reliability issues in Vegas.

Former user wrote on 6/5/2022, 8:38 AM

I went through every scenario suggested above and it crashed every time. I went with these attached settings and it crashed once but actually made it all the way through the second go-around. I'm not sure, however, that these are settings I'd want to keep going forward for the best output results, right?

@RogerS Hi, he had it set at that originally, the other boxes were ticked tho, @dave-k what happens when you choose Auto like in the pics above but untick MKV reader & the Legacy boxes?

Also Hi, can you go to your icon at the top, click it - My Profile, & fill in your Signature with your Vegas version, Windows version & system specs, full name of CPU, GPU, & amount of RAM etc. this will then show at the bottom of the comments 👍 (see mine & other peoples at the bottom of comments) thanks.

Did you apply "GL Transition" by any chance? There are still errors in the latest version. Try to remove it all. I never get an error if I don't use it.

Anyone give this a try yet and try to duplicate my settings?

@dave-k I just tried to download, and it says I need access. Ask for Access. Did you make the files sharable?

Hi @dave-k I was able to open your file. A couple of things.

The intro and first clip is 29.97fps while the main video is 30fps but variable framerate. (its audio and that of the outro videos are also missing from the folder- they seem to be in downloads on your PC.)

This main video has wild swings from 30 to 120fps. It looks like it's been resaved from the original somehow- is it possible to work with the original file? Or when you convert it for editing, take care with the settings and convert it to an easier to edit constant framerate file? Below is Mediainfo for it.

Finally, under options, quantize to frame, is this set to enabled? Also set it to show unquantized frame boundaries. None of your audio is actually aligned with the video frames which can cause problems upon render.

I was able to complete a render without fixing the frame boundaries or reencoding the source file. I used the 1080p MagixAVC NVENC preset for 50fps and changed the framerate to 30. I use my Intel decoder, non-legacy AVC decoding and GPU acceleration is on in preferences.

There's no audio of course so can't say if that was a factor with the failed renders.

The video jitters a bit but I checked the original and it's there, too. It's not a well-produced 30fps video- it needs to be redone from the source file as constant framerate. Keyint might be better as 30 than 10 as well.

I do get blackout (no image data) at around 13:40 but think that's when my laptop overheated and thermally throttled as the rest was fine.

dave-k wrote on 6/9/2022, 11:11 PM

I had extracted the main sermon to keep the video file small. It obviously has questionable results. I have gone ahead and uploaded the original file now. And, yes, our download has the audio slightly out-of-sync with the video, which is why I need to adjust it on the timeline. Thanks.

dave-k wrote on 6/13/2022, 10:35 PM

I assume nobody has been able to figure out why I keep crashing?

RogerS wrote on 6/13/2022, 10:44 PM

My guess would be variable framerate x NVIDIA decoder.

Did you try re-converting the video and switching back to the Intel decoder? It's easy in Shutter Encoder. Try fixing the frame boundaries as well and see if it renders.

dave-k wrote on 6/13/2022, 11:15 PM

How do I use Shutter Encoder and what is re-converting the video supposed to do? It's any video that I put in the timeline that crashes, not just the file that I uploaded in my Google Drive. Not sure what you're having me do is the solution?

RogerS wrote on 6/13/2022, 11:36 PM

I think you should try the things I suggest in an orderly manner as it's important to control variables.

First, reset preferences/ file i/o to defaults.
Second double-check Intel iGPU and NVIDIA Studio drivers are recent.

Third, let's ensure you are working with media that decodes well in Vegas. I don't really know how the original file or the low file size copy were made (neither appear to be straight from camera) so I'd suggest re-encoding this time and Shutter Encoder can help with that.

Sample settings for your main file:

Alternatively, instead of the re-encode and your current project, try this known good project with all known-good media. If it crashes upon playback or render that rules out media as a cause: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Exbi4K3hbxw6snJuisR1ble-0tCPVNcIcNnx0BAtSIM/

RogerS wrote on 6/13/2022, 11:50 PM

Also, can you say more about the crash? Does it give the Vegas crash reporter? If so, stick in your email and a link to this thread and send to Vegas Creative Software/Magix.

Try clicking on "show details" and paste in what you see.

Alternatively if there isn't a crash report perhaps something is here? (change current user to your user name)

C:\Users\current user\AppData\Local\CrashDumps
or
C:\Users\current user\AppData\Local\VEGAS\ErrorReport

dave-k wrote on 6/14/2022, 12:26 AM

I'll give your settings a try tomorrow (it's late here). The crash is actually a freeze. I have to go to Task Manager and hit "end task" to get Vegas to close. There is nothing under CrashDumps and under ErrorReport is an .erpt file.

RogerS wrote on 6/14/2022, 4:08 AM

Hi Dave, thanks for the report. After you give the known good project a try tomorrow with default settings, here are a couple other ideas as I'm in a very different timezone and don't want to keep you waiting.

You could try Intel's tool to check for the latest Intel drivers. link

See if the system itself is stable when stressed. I have found issues with my own system under load with the free GPU test Heaven. Cinebench is another option that will stress the CPU and GPU. Go to search in Windows and try "Windows Memory Diagnostic" to test the ram.

The next time it freezes you can try to create a dump file by going to task manager (control-alt-delete and then processes- right click on Vegas).

This might be best shared with Vegas support for diagnostic help.
Are any of the Error reports very recent? There are usually zip files up top with a bunch of logs. They could also be helpful to Vegas support.

Other than that are there any other changes to Vegas that could possibly cause issues? Any plugins added recently for audio (VST) or video?

dave-k wrote on 6/15/2022, 12:17 AM

Roger, I reset the default settings and re-encoded and the rendering process got to 59% and then crashed. I did get a crash dump file this time. Not sure how to read it? I would think the issue has to be with my settings because I'm able to render on my laptop; whereas if it had to do with file type or encoding problems, I would think it would crash on my laptop too?  Right now, just to be able to finish this project, I copied all files to my laptop and finalized it.

I can't get the Intel website to work. I installed the software but then I keep getting an error message. I get a pop-up in the lower right-hand corner saying I have 1 update available but then when I click on it, it goes to this error page again.

I ran Heaven and it went to a black screen and nothing happened after that. Here were the results of Cinebench:

I haven't tried the sample project yet. That's on my agenda for tomorrow.

Hi Dave, based on downloading your media and this report I don't think it's what I thought it was before. While media x GPU is the main cause of crashes/hangs in Vegas, in this case I don't think the media is an issue. I was also able to render with your full size file without issue. (If you do need to reduce the size in the future try Shutter Encoder and just change resolution- it will yield a much better file than the other method you tried)

I think there's something wrong with the GPU based on Vegas, Intel, and Heaven. (for Cinebench doesn't it also test the GPU? Is there any result for that)

Have you filed a support request to Vegas Creative Software? I'd give it a try an send them the crash log.

Beyond that I'd start with the Intel iGPU, go to device manager and uninstall it. Then with DDU Uninstaller delete all traces of the driver from your system and try to install a new one from Intel. I did this when a bad driver was giving Vegas fits. See if you can just download the latest manually.

Hi Dave, are you using Windows Explorer to bring media files into your project?
Dragging media from the Vegas pro Explorer window may make it more stable.

dave-k wrote on 6/24/2022, 4:31 PM

No, I'm inserting all media through Vegas. At this point I'm thinking of just reformatting my hard drive and seeing if that resolves the issue. Nothing I try works.
