Vegas Pro 20 Crashing Video

Michael-Kawula wrote on 6/21/2023, 11:07 AM

So, here it goes.

Now I've recently just upgraded to Vegas Pro 20 and I've not been able to edit any video at all. Yes, this is not because of corupt video files. I cannot edit ANY videos. Not just one specific one.

So, the issue is, when I put a video onto my timeline, and maybe try and scrub around, or hit play, the video preview is just a black screen or sometimes it'll play video, but then the frame counter under it just constantly has the dots going behind whatever frame it's on, and if I press pause....the whole program freezes, turns the white, not responding screen, and therefore crashes. I've tried every fix I can think of, that has worked on past programs, from YouTube. The only thing I can think of is I need to update my graphics drivers or maybe finally upgrade to Windows 11 (I'm on 10). I have no clue, which is why I'm here. Thank you for reading and I hope you all can help me :)

So, here's all the info I can give:

Build: 411

Windows Version Edition    Windows 10 Home
Version    22H2
Installed on    ‎6/‎3/‎2021
OS build    19045.3086

Happens to all footage, not one specific video

No clue if this is a permanent solution, but I've decided to finally maybe try the opposite of all online tutorials and I've finally found my solution. So, all online tutorials will say disable or uncheck "enable legacy AVC decoding" and "enable legacy HEVC decoding", wellllll, I decided to enable those both, and now all videos play in my preview window, WITHOUT freezing or crashing. All online tutorials told me to turn these off or uncheck them and that's what's been messing me up. I hope I was also able to help someone else out there :)

You basically have an issue with your GPU and you have just told Vegas to not use your GPU hence it runs OK. But you will not get any accelerated FX or timeline/preview. I expect you do not have the correct drivers for your NVIDIA GPU which is a compatible card.

You can see what Vegas finds when it detects your GPU options for both CPU and GPU by looking at this file. Just open C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\VEGAS Pro\20.0\ gpu_video_x64.log with note pad to see what's inside. It will identify any errors it finds.

(Intel 3rd gen i5@4.1GHz, 32GB RAM, SSD, 1080Ti GPU, Windows 10) Not now used with Vegas.

@Michael-Kawula Hi, I doubt what you've shared so far will help anyone, you haven't given much information, as @andypsmith says you've just skirted the problem.,

j-v asked for info, -

From your pictures it shows you have a GTX 1660 graphics card & 16GB RAM but what CPU do you have?

In your video you chose No when dragging the media onto the timeline, generally for better playback you'd choose Yes to match project with media. so in the link given above in j-v comment MediaInfo is asked for, there's an App called MediaInfo, download it, it's free & a fast download with no added adverts or any of that rubbish. https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

After downloading, right click on the media file in your Windows folder, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the options at the top, Copy & paste the information in a new comment on here 👍

As andypsmith says check your GPU driver is up to date, Nvidia Geforce can help with that https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce/geforce-experience/ Or look in the Help tab of Vegas - Check for driver updates.

I'm on Windows 10 & will be for quite a while as will a lot of people because Windows was only released in October 5, 2021,

All are unticked for me,

I just checked that Geforce program and it said my drivers are up to date. My CPU is in a picture below here. Also, I've tried clicking yes when dragging my video onto my timeline and it doesn't do anything different. Lastly, it's not a specific video that doesn't work. It was all videos. Hopefully, I've provided some more info

Please update your Radeon graphics drivers- there are numerous known bugs with older ones. Try here: https://www.amd.com/en/support/apu/amd-ryzen-processors/amd-ryzen-7-mobile-processors-radeon-graphics/amd-ryzen-7-4800h

Then put preferences, file io back to defaults and see if it plays better.

Also take care with framerates between the source video and project. I would let VEGAS alter the project based on the first imported video or at least doublecheck what you are doing. If that video is an actual 60fps, a 30fps or 60fps timeline would work fine but would not recommend 29.97.

If all of your media are captures, the capture settings become important. We can potentially help with that or check the comments here.
