Vegas Pro 20 (latest bld) still unstable with ATEM-recorded media

RedRob-CandlelightProdctns wrote on 7/6/2023, 9:44 PM

We've found the only way for us to edit reliably in V20 (without frequent crashes) is to enable legacy AVC file decode after which it's really quite solid. Using the newer decode (not checking the "enable legacy" box) but setting Hardware Decoder to "off" does *not* make it as stable as enabling legacy decode.

This is my experience with both AMD RX470 (desktop) and also NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti Laptop GPU. Both also have Intel graphics onboard.

Unfortunately, the legacy decoder can't ready ATEM-recorded files, so I'm forced to uncheck the box and deal with the inefficiency of frequent crashing.

Does anyone with inside scoop know if work is being done to improve stability of the non-legacy AVC decoding?

Is the decoder in use the Intel iGPU for both systems?

Can you share a few minutes of ATEM-recorded files on a cloud share.

Interesting to hear about Legacy AVC being more stable then default with GPU decoder disabled

@john_dennis BM's sample project is here https://downloads.blackmagicdesign.com/products/atemmini/edit/single-disk/20200730-99629c/ATEM-Mini-Pro-ISO-Demonstration-Project.zip

@RedRob-CandlelightProdctns Hi just out of curiosity I downloaded @Former user samples, (there's 3 main files + one graph vid?) . they play well on my machine, Legacy off, Is there a certain thing that increases crashes?

😁 I added the things that normally upset Vegas, I cut up the media events, added an S_Transition, Added color grading, Added a BBC+ Blur with a Mocha mask that slowly grows, Preview Best (Full), I can't make it crash 🤦‍♂️🤣

They also play fine on my old PC with best full and legacy off.

(Intel 3rd gen i5@4.1GHz, 32GB RAM, SSD, 1080Ti GPU, Windows 10) Not now used with Vegas.

13th gen i913900K - water cooled, 96GB RAM, 4TB M2 drive, 4TB games SSD, 2TB video SSD, GPU RTX 4080 Super, Windows 11 pro

@andyrpsmith I've quite enjoyed playing with them, transitions - 24fps on the second loop play, @Former user Would you put one of those files in your app that shows the GOP, purely out of curiousity. (gotta find me an app like that)

Well you guys are awesome! But y'all stink at the same time... you're supposed to say "oh yeah, we have the same stability issue you're experiencing on both your machines.. it's caused by ABC and it'll be fixed in the next Vegas build!" 😉

*l'sigh*

We take our ATEM ISO project and run it through a script I wrote which sets up our project for post-editing. It doesn't yet implement 100% of the live switch commands (I haven't implemented the upstream or downstream keys) but it otherwise is working for our needs.
- adds the PGM (live mix) recording to a top track
- adds each camera to its own track, along with the .WAV files for each camera's ISO audio
- adds a master MultiCam (MC) track where the media has 8 takes (one for each ISO recording) and a 9th which is the PGM output for reference in a MC view.
- applies all the live edits by cutting the MC events, setting the correct take, and overlapping as needed to have the same cross-fades that were used in the ATEM live switch camera changes
- if necessary I've found I can drop in the SD-card footage from camera (helpful if wireless signal from cam to ATEM was unstable) too (not automated, but doable)

.The editing (unstable with Legacy Encoder not being used) is previewing either the MC track or the PGM track content, NOT in MC mode. Just editing, stopping starting, tweaking levels on two Tascam audio tracks (Vegasaur VoiceOver helps set this up so nicely!), tweaking some titles (Vegasaur-generated, with a "selective paste" from a master title that has schmancy effects applied). 100% of my transitions are cross-fades (except for opening title). Some track audio EQ here, track audio compressor on master output there, Izotope spectral desnoise on one audio track... stuff I use often.

So I'm not doing anything particularly exciting here.

It *does* play OK. Just... crashes more than I'd like, and more than with the legacy decoder (can't use here). It *is* more stable setting the hardware decode to "none" than if it's set to the Intel card. (I don't set it to the Nvidia or AMD GPUs since they're used for the preview and I've found it doesn't perform well if both are using the same GPU)

Not sure how else to troubleshoot.. :-/

@Former user You most likely have Shutter Encoder for transcoding, add the file, select it and right click, there is the option 'Gop Structure' It will show the first 13 frames, there is a seek bar at the bottom where you can scroll to left and right. As John Dennis pointed out once it will always show videos starting on an I frame whether they actually start on an I frame or not, Sony cameras may begin with 2 B-frames before the I frame, but Shutter Encoder won't show you that. Not that that's of any importance here.

These files have a GOP of 24 which Vegas loves and no B frames. I frame followed by 23 P frames which is very easy to process

@Former user Cool thanks, yep I have Shutter Encoder but because it doesn't pin to the Taskbar I forget about it, Just been going through my vids, I remember you putting a ProRes on for me, & on here it's obvious why it works so well, 2x I frames 😁

@RedRob-CandlelightProdctns Yeah sorry I bet that does stink, but I was only playing with a few files & I can't even start to recreate the rest of your project as you mention, for me audio is the volume button, either it needs turning up or turning down 😁
