Vegas Pro 22 Video levels wrong, crushed blacks

Vincent-Brice wrote on 10/25/2024, 2:42 AM

I just seized the offer of upgrading to 22 from 20 and I have every setting that I can see identical and yet video is too dark and vivid in 22. The picture shows them side by side and whereas 20 renders a clip filmed in flat CineD correctly, 22 renders it too dark, crushing the blacks. What am I doing wrong?

If you right click on the media and see its properties, is the full color range read correctly by both versions of VEGAS?

If not, can you make a sample available via Google Drive, etc. There were some metadata issues with later builds of 21 and perhaps some remain.

Thanks for the reply Roger. Yes, you're right, I took a look, and V22 properties show the clip as "Limited" colour range and it's greyed out. What do you suggest?

Very odd that you can't even adjust it. Can you please provide a sample (can be a few second clip of anything) via any upload service?

As a workaround try adding a levels Fx at the media level to reduce the contrast back down again (computer RGB to studio RGB preset).

I noticed in V22, at least on mine, if project property pixel format is set to 8-bit (Legacy), then the color range property is greyed out. When project properties is set to 8-bit Full, then color range adjustment is possible.

That's the case in Vegas Pro 21-315 also.

A temporary toggle of the Pixel Format to 8 bit (full range) will allow you to define the Color Range manually. Your setting will remain when you change the Pixel Format setting back to Legacy 8-bit Video Levels.

Ah ha, that's fixed it! Funny, I had toggled between Full and Video levels before I wrote the question but at that point when I opened the clip properties the option was greyed out. But anyway, yes, setting it to Legacy video levels and then opening the clip properties, allowed me to change it there to Full, and then returning to the project properties, it's set to full range.

Roger, Robert and John, many, many thanks 😊

If VEGAS is misreading the metadata there's still a problem.
