Vegas Pro 22 - video sputtering and freezes

jredmond wrote on 12/18/2024, 10:58 AM

Using files from a Sony PXW-FS7 camera with mxf video format. 1920 x 1080. Been using for years without problems.

I have 26 files about 18 minutes long

video sputters and freezes. Try changing in preferences, the dynamic ram and I could not tell any difference

Also changed the preview display to draft mode with lowest setting, still no change.

updated Vegas Pro to build 194 and Nvida Studio driver 566.36

still video sputters and freezes

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, James

I've also went back to Vegas Pro 20 and it works better. Still not perfect.

I have edited a huge wedding project, shoot with the FS7 in slog3, UHD 25p XAVC-i. Working with a LUT to transform it to rec709 - but in the extra LUT plugin.

Do you use the CGP?

What is the footage type you shoot?

Project settings?

Specification of your machine?

CGP means the color grading portal in Vegas.

And the project settings go far beyond resolution and framerate. Maybe you have a snapshoot from the settings of the project properties?

Wolfgang, Thanks for your help. I have not gotten to color grading. Just trying to play the various clips in the project.

Is it possible that Vegas 22 is using a different codec to play the files? Not sure how to find the correct one.

Wolfgang S. wrote on 12/19/2024, 10:17 AM

This are quite simple 8bit full range project settings. According to your specifications of your machine, that should be played back in a nice way.

Have you tried to reduce the preview quality?

Please post also snapshoots of your preferences - both for video and file i/o.

Yes, I tried reducing the preview quality - basically little effect. Attached are the snapshoots. Thanks again.

Wolfgang S. wrote on 12/19/2024, 10:47 AM

Any other effects that you apply to the footage?

You could try to use in the file i/o preferences your i-GPU (that you have in your CPU). But I am not sure if that helps enough.

Or you try to enable the legacy AVC encoder.

And another try could be to disable the direct GPU import path (what disables the new video engine).

But do it step by step, if anything helps.

To see, how an event in the timeline is decoded, make a right click on the event in the timeline. Under properties media you can scroll down and find the decoder used for the footage.

Again, thanks for your assistance.

No effects. Just at this point trying to play the footage.

Can you upload one of your original files to a webspace, like google drive? And send me the download link? I would like to test your footage.

@Wolfgang S.Could you kindly take a minute and look into my issue as well? I posted this in the forum under Video : Vegas Pro 22 Build 194 - keeps crashing during render.

Thanks in advance.

@Rosled I will do so.
@jredmond I will have a look to the file. Takes me some time please (I am on the way to go skiing)

Thank you for the file. I see here that it is a 10bit 422 All-I HD clip. I recommend to adjust the project settings to the actual frame rate of the footage (what is here not 30p but 60p).

And: I have tested that footage on my laptop. With the best preview settings best/full, the clip plays back with the full framerate of 59,94 fps with 8bit full range. Even if I change the settings to 32bit floating point (video level), the clip plays back with the full frame rate.

So, are there other effects that you apply to the clip?

You find the specification of my laptop in my signiture.

Wolfgang, I had not added any effects on the footage.

I figured it out. It was my Crucial x6 4TB SSD drive. When I put the footage on a 4TB regular drive it all plays properly. Would not have guessed that for when I got the X6, it was highly rated and supposed to play 4K footage.

Thanks again for all your efforts. James

Playback performance in VP20 is much better than VP22 when playing from a hard drive, I'd go as far as saying you can't edit this file from a hard drive in VP22 BEST/FULL. So it looks like this new decoder is more sensitive to latency than old one. VP22 works great for this file when read from SSD in regards to moving across edit points however it's still very slow when play is set and moving to different parts of the file.

I don't like that the decoding is worse from a hdd with VP22 and that pause before playback is also strange given it's intraframe 1080P, it's not like Vegas has to search for an I frame first
