VEGAS Pro 23 Bug: Timeline Events Lag After Ungrouping Video/Audio

Abdali wrote on 9/16/2025, 10:15 PM

Hello everyone,

I've discovered a serious bug that affects both video and audio events on the timeline, but only after they have been ungrouped from a video clip. This issue has a significant impact on workflow.

Here is a step-by-step breakdown of my workflow that consistently leads to the problem:

I place a video clip (almost any video file, for example H264 or H265 file 8bit or 10bit) onto the timeline.

I then ungroup the video and audio events (using U).

I attempt to drag either the ungrouped video event or the ungrouped audio event.

The dragging motion is extremely jerky and laggy.

Crucially, this problem does not occur with any of the following:

Dragging the video and audio events when they are still grouped or Dragging them together.

Delete one of the ungrouped events. For example, if I delete the video event, the audio event can be dragged smoothly afterward.

Dragging any standalone media files (such as WAV or MP3 audio, or separate video files) on the timeline.

This bug appeared in my VEGAS Pro 21 and 22 as well immediately after I installed VEGAS Pro 23, and it affects both new and older projects in all versions of VEGAS PRO 21,22 & 23. I have already tried reinstalling VEGAS Pro 23 and my graphics drivers, but the issue remains.

Has anyone else experienced this specific behavior.?

I have also attached a short video clip that demonstrates the laggy and jerky behavior for easier diagnosis.

Isn't that the same issue as here?

My apologies for the oversight in my earlier post.

Upon further testing, I have discovered that this bug affects both the video and audio events on the timeline after they have been ungrouped. My initial focus was on the audio, but it's clear the jerky and laggy behavior applies to both. i could delete the previous post if there's confusion.

Just tried this on a project, removed the grouping on two clips and not seeing this effect. The clips move without any lag. Also not seeing this in V21 or V22 either.

I agree that in VP23 when an events audio and video are ungrouped dragging either on the timeline is a bit jerky, whereas grouped they move super smooth. I use 'Ignore event grouping' for this quite a lot. It's not the case with VP22.

Does it matter what kind of media it is?

andyrpsmith wrote on 9/17/2025, 8:03 AM

The media I tried it with is: 4K XAVCS and a AV1 rendered clip 2m long imported back into V23.

Same with 4k XAVCS and HD AVC and wether the monitor was Preview (half) or Good(full).

Then I tried something I often find beneficial - I restarted the PC and guess what - the issue has largely gone away though I do think its not as super smooth as when grouped. Not noticed it before.

It's always a good idea, when a PC doesn't behave as expected, to restart the PC.

This issue occurs with almost every type of video I use. I have also restarted my PC multiple times, but the problem still exists.

@Abdali Is this with both of your systems? I have a 13600K myself and the same ram.

Did anything else change at the same time you installed VP 23?

@RogerS Yes, that's correct. I've found that both of my systems have the same issue. I don't recall changing anything on either system; as i remember the problem only began after installing VEGAS Pro 23. And for now i have not seen any other significant changes that I can identify.

On a more positive note, I'm genuinely loving VEGAS Pro 23 so far. It feels incredibly fast and snappy, and the native rendering performance is a huge step forward. The fact that I no longer need to rely on Voukoder is a game-changer, as VEGAS Pro 23's own presets provide nearly identical render speeds.

While I am enjoying the new version, there are still a few minor bugs I've encountered that impact my workflow:

A bug with the audio FX UI the small navigation arrows used to cycle left and right through VST plugins is invincible but it works.

The program sometimes crashes when I cancel a render.

The dragging events on the timeline issue we've been discussing, which slows down my editing process.

I'll be sure to keep everyone updated with any new developments, bugs, or improvements that I encounter.

Is there a possible hard drive seek issue? What if all the media is on a fast internal SSD? What makes me think it's not a VP 23 bug is that your other versions of VEGAS are also affected.

Hard Drive Seek Issue: All of my project files and media are located on a fast NVMe SSD, so I am confident that a hard drive seek issue is not the cause.

Everything else on my system seems to work perfectly fine, until i installed vegas pro 23 which makes the problem even more puzzling.

I wonder if a Windows Update is behind the problem.

@Abdali What is your Windows version and build number, and what updates have recently been installed by Windows?

Besides this dragging issue, the rest of VEGAS Pro seems to be working fine. The only other change I can recall around that time was a Windows update Build 26100.6584 which came out on September 9, 2025.

For me a recent Windows 11 patch again starting capping by mobile CPU at 1.4Ghz. Rolling back and reinstalling the patch helped.
