Vegas Pro displays distorted screen on larger screens

rhexor wrote on 1/22/2025, 10:03 PM

When attempting to use Vegas Pro to record the screen, it appears distorted when the screen size/resolution exceeds 1600 x 1200 pixels. I'd expect that all screen resolutions are supported and naturally, I'd like to avoid downscaling or downgrading from 3440 x 1440 as it's a poor user experience. Is there something different I could try?

Operating system: Windows 11 24H2
Application: Vegas Pro 21
Screen: VP348QGL
Screen size/resolution: 3440 x 1440
Refresh rate: 75hz

Do you have to use VEGAS Capture? It's not the most reliable tool. Windows can do screen recording, too.

rhexor wrote on 1/23/2025, 12:07 AM

Thanks @RogerS No, I don't. My preference would be to use same tool for recording and editing (as it's one of the reasons I purchased it). It's odd that Vegas Pro doesn't support larger screen resolutions given how common it is.

It also mentions that Vegas Pro brings it all together - https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/video-editing/how-to-record-your-computer-screen/

RogerS wrote on 1/23/2025, 12:22 AM

In my experience the tool has various issues- not capturing certain audio, certain screens, etc. It could use to be revamped.

What about OBS?

rhexor wrote on 1/23/2025, 12:26 AM

Thanks @RogerS I did consider OBS however it doesn't offer an integrated editing suite (to the best of my knowledge) and tools like Camtasia are way outside of budget.

RogerS wrote on 1/23/2025, 12:28 AM

Do you need to do both in one program? Record in OBS and edit in VEGAS?

rhexor wrote on 1/23/2025, 1:07 AM

@RogerS, that would my preference. I appreciate alternative solutions however to maximize and streamline the workflow, I'd like Vegas Pro to support wide screens.

RogerS wrote on 1/23/2025, 1:14 AM

There is a feature requests thread here to share how you'd like Capture to work: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-feature-requests--134374/

I'm not sure if Capture is completely unable to capture higher resolutions or if it's a problem with particular GPUs, drivers, etc. With my laptop before the desktop was completely black.

I also used VEGAS Stream for a nice workflow but it's also gone.

rhexor wrote on 1/23/2025, 1:18 AM

Thanks @RogerS. You've been super helpful. Is there a way to identify if it's anything other than Vegas Capture? For example, the device I have is using Nvidia RTX 4080. It has the latest Nvidia drivers installed. It's disappointing it doesn't work with larger screens.

RogerS wrote on 1/23/2025, 1:20 AM

Let me test it here with my 4060 in a bit. I don't have as high a resolution screen.

I doubt it's a driver issue; all the drivers have been similar of late for video editing.

Thanks heaps. It'd be great to know if it works or doesn't at your end

Gid wrote on 1/23/2025, 1:35 AM

@rhexor I use Nvidia Geforce, Alt+F1 captures a screengrab picture, Alt+F9 records the screen as AVC/AAC , I have a 32 UHD monitor.

https://www.nvidia.com/en-gb/software/nvidia-app/

PS, it also has a driver update feature.

I've tried Vegas capture, never seen a problem like your image but I don't use it because.. lets say it's unpredictable or unreliable.

@Gid, I was considering ShadowPlay although similar to some of the other alternatives, it doesn't have an integrated editing suite (to the best of my knowledge and happy to be told I'm wrong).

Gid wrote on 1/23/2025, 1:45 AM

@rhexor Fair enough, but that's why I have Vegas Pro.. (also for other reasons of course)

If I want to quickly capture the screen I don't want to have to be opening VP, with Geforce I don't have to open anything, just press the keys I mentioned. To be honest in all the software I've had I haven't used the capture options they've had, when using VP I don't have a reason to capture the VP UI, I'm watching or doing something else, I capture & then switch over or edit later in VP. Forgive me but that's what an editor is for, surely any capture software that has an editing facility is going to be limited to just simple functions?

@Gid, that's also why I purchased Vegas Pro but it doesn't seem to support wide screens i.e. 3440 x 1440 and I'm hoping someone may have a solution I'm overlooking.

Gid wrote on 1/23/2025, 2:07 AM

@rhexor I think as @RogerS  mentioned 'It's not the most reliable tool', I've read pretty much all the comments over the last 5yrs & the capture feature doesn't get mentioned much, I can't spk for everyone of course but I get the feeling the majority of people on here simply don't use it,.

Everyone's PC set-up is different so replicating your problem is hard to do. I understand that if you buy software with a certain feature you expect that feature to work but as with other's you might just have to use alternative capture software & maybe at some point the VP team will update this feature, I doubt it's top of their list at the moment though as their hands are full with the main major upgrade.

What is the reason to do both capture and editing in the same program? Sync issues?

I opened it on my laptop- it only finds my external display (2560x1440) and that looks fine but there's no internal display, the webcam doesn't work and resource use is very high.

I wouldn't use Capture, I'd use OBS or the built-in video tool with windows (shift + control + win) for simple captures.

rhexor wrote on 1/23/2025, 3:13 AM

Thanks @Gid and @RogerS I appreciate the time you've taken to answer my questions as well as share your suggestions. The background to using a single tool for both recording and editing is because it enables me to optimize my workflow without needing to rely on additional tools and the time/experience it takes to learn them too.

I take onboard that Vegas Capture may not be reliable although it's disappointing that Vegas Pro markets its capabilities as a fully-functioning app. I'll explore the apps you listed.
