Vegas Pro random black screen rendering - Gopro and Waylens camera

Wolfe-Macleod wrote on 3/8/2021, 2:46 PM

Recently I obtained a Gopro Hero8 and Waylens Horizon dash cams.

I'm a user of Vegas Pro 16, but the VP18 trial is giving me the same issues, so here we are.

Rendering video from any other cameras, such as from my phone, works fine on my main desktop machine.

Rendering video from the GoPro and Waylens cameras seems to work find on my laptop (sloowww...)

Here's the thing.. if I grab the raw .ts video files directly from the Waylens, that seems to work. But Waylens has automotive OBDII data overlay that is exported from their "Studio" software, which I need.

Rendering video from these two cameras - with ANY render setting, codec, project settings, etc, gives a random black screen after several seconds when rendering on my desktop machine. When it reaches that point, the rest of the rendered video is black.

Have tried "disable resampling" -- not using the GPU for rendering, all sorts of stuff.

Graphics cards: EVGA RTX 2070 Super - EVGA GTX 1660ti. Built in motherboard Intel HD Graphics 4600 (not used) Motherboard is an older Gigabyte G1 Sniper 5. Drivers up to date.

On the laptop, Nvidia gtx 970m GPU.

Running the latest NVidia studio drivers (happens with gaming drivers as well)

Motherboard's graphics chipset drivers are up to date.

VP16 Build 424 on both machines

Win10.

I'm at my wit's end here. I've never had this problem before. I've tried everything suggested by Google searches for this issue.

If anyone wishes for a sample of the Waylens camera video, get it here.

Thanks for testing that, j-v. My desktop installation is now starting to not like the video taken from my phone, either. I've tried to re-render some older phone stuff again, and am getting the same black screen after a short time of rendering. This is becoming maddening.

Strange, seems like something is wrong with the desktop. It has enough power to run two GPUs?

Which GPU is the monitor connected to on the desktop? Can you disable the one not connected to test?

1000 watt power supply. The 1660ti is used for physX. I could disconnect it, but up till recently I haven't had any issues at all in Vegas, so I kind of doubt that's it.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Vegas a couple times. Just strange that the laptop would work for rendering the same stuff...

1000 watts ought to be plenty so that's not it.

Something on this system changed and it feels less like we are troubleshooting Vegas (as it's rendering fine with your laptop, my laptop and J-v's) and more the desktop computer. I think it's worth disconnecting the second GPU just to test a simpler config with Vegas. Beyond that, are the .net frameworks installed? There's some discussion of this elsewhere on this forum.

You can always go the route of disabling all GPU-related functions (turn off preview acceleration, set so4compound in internal preferences to False), use a Mainconcept render template and see if it works, but that's not ideal.

I don't have so many more ideas, so consider filing a tech support request to Vegas Creative Software as well.

Wolfe-Macleod wrote on 3/9/2021, 4:46 PM

Nothing has changed on the desktop, save for losing my audio sliders in Vegas a few months back and finally doing some control>shift>startVegas thing to reset Vegas settings about two weeks ago to get them back.

But yeah, >NET framework is installed. I;ve never heard of So4compound before, so I'll give that a try.

I did file a support request.. so far, hasn't been any help. "Try Vegas 18" they say...

So4 is the newer decoder for Vegas. In 16 you have to go into internal preferences to disable, in 18 there is a legacy decoding checkbox in preferences on the file i/o tab.

Thanks, I'll try that.
