Do you have a camera that you can capture from? At least if you could get the capture utility to work with another device, you'd know the issue isn't with Vegas. For instance, I have a Dazzle device that doesn't work at all. Nothing works when I try to capture with that USB device--but my camera captures normally. So if you had some other device to try, maybe it would work and you would have narrowed down your problem...

Thanks, but I have no other device to test with. I just ran the Capture program by itself without Vegas running and it did the same thing.

The ADVC 110 is a box not a card right?
It connects via firewire to the PC. Should just work using Vegas Vidcap. I suspect there's something wrong with your PC. I'm no great fan of Vegas's Vidcap but I've never, ever had it crash.

When you connect the ADVC 110 does Windows see it i.e. does Windows give you a little chime?

Bob.

OK, I am lost...you are using the Vegas capture, of some other capture program?

If you don't have Vegas running and you are trying to capture, you obviously must have another application. So there's your issue...that device. Try to find someone with another "capturable" device, and try again.

EDIT: http://desktop.thomsongrassvalley.com/products/ADVC110/index.phpHere[/link] is that device Bob. It appears as though there is a FW port. I wonder if he's tried it with Windows Movie Maker--it's at least worth a shot. Although the Dazzle device I have did not work from within Vegas, it did work with Windows Movie Maker.

No, it's Vegas Capture. I just thought I'd try it alone.

OK, then try Windows Movie Maker and forget about Vegas. And what about Bob's question--does Windows chime when you plug or unplug the device?

Do you know if the drivers are installed correctly? (Sorry, forgot if you mentioned it.) Try to open Device Manager and see if the device is recognized, and functioning properly.

Yes that's right, it's a Firewire box. The capture screen sees it, but it locks up. I will look for this Vidcap...
