Vegas Pro8c problem at startup

My Vegas Pro8c suddenly started 'freezing' at the boot-up phase.
Specifically--it stops at 'creating audio engine'.
I uninstalled and re-installed and during the startup just after re-installation it does open up and works ok.
However, when I close it and then try to open again it 'freezes/hangs' at the same place: 'creating audio engine'
The only way out is to shutdown the computer. There are also no warnings/errors/codes of any kind...it just freezes.
I have read others with same problem but there does not appear to be a specific 'fix' for this. I get the sense it can be any number of things.
This is a big problem ..obviously as I can't do anything if I can't open my editing program.
I've tried 'removing' any recently installed software---i.e. 'arcsoft editing program' which i put in to use with a KODAK/flip HD camera...I've since taken that out.
I've uninstalled and re-installed the audio card: Sigma Tel Audio..
I've got a Sony Vaio laptop---2.0Gb of RAM. 2.0Ghz duo-core processor... model is: VGN-SZ3XWP/C ...I'm running Windows XP Pro ---with Service Pack 3.
Its quite frustrating not being able to find a solution for this after 2 days....
I also spent an hour or so on the phone with a very helpful Creative Software technician....I was given a list of things to try----none , unfortunately, has solved the problem.
If anyone can help I'd be most appreciative.
