Vegas Project file cant open - "unknown file type"

Nicklas wrote on 2/16/2024, 5:10 AM

Hello! I need some help with one of my Vegas Pro Project files! I had been working on it for 3 days and when I went to open it yesterday i got this error. The details just says it can't be opened

I noticed when I went to open to project file, the filetype said Unknown

Every other file says Vegas Pro Project.
So I'm not sure why it says Unknown File Type, because in its properties it says its a .VEG file.

I have tried to use the .bak file, but it gives the same error and I dont have any other autosaves from this project.

I have also tried to copy the file and rename it, and rename the file extention but did not fix it.
I have the file on an external harddisk and have been moving it from my laptop to PC.

I am running Vegas Pro 14

Is there anything I can do to fix the file to be able to open it again?

With the first error window which is related to a media incompatibility, did you click the 'details' button to get more information about the problem. This would probably give a good clue as to what's going on.

Just for future reference, it's a good idea to regularly save a project with an updated name - e.g. name1.veg, name2.veg, name3 .veg, etc - so that there is an earlier .veg to go back to in instances like this.

Having never experienced this 'unknown' project file problem before from Vegas Pro 10 to 21, perhaps double-check the integrity of video media that you may have recently added to the project given that the 2nd error window mentions video media stream.

With that in mind, what video media are you using? Please upload a detailed MediaInfo report - a free app - to show the details of the media that you are using on the timeline.

Try to right click the project file (.veg), and in the menu that pops up, select "open with". Pick Vegas Pro from that menu, or select "choose another app" from the menu. If vegas pro isn't there, you must then browse to it. Scroll down the list to where it says "choose another app on your PC" and go find it in : "C:\Program Files\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro 21.0\vegas210.exe" or where you installed it.
This association with vegas could have been removed with a registry cleaner or some such software...

As I re-edited the video it happened again. I now tried to add all the media that i used to see if i got an error and this time I got an error on a PNG file. Im not sure why it cant import the PNG file or how it broke, since it was fine the 2 times I imported it in. Is there a way for me to remove the PNG file from the project even tho I cant open it?

Yes. Go to the Project Media window and highlight the problematic event/s, R clcik it/them and then choose either 'Remove from project' or 'Remove from project and delete'.

That you are having problems in Vegas Pro with a .png file is unexpected and not experience before in my case. Perhaps use your favorite image editor to convert those .png images to .jpg and see if that improves things.

Oh I meant if I can remove the PNG file without opening the Project file, since it gives an error when I try to open the .veg file, which means I cant remove it from the project in Project Media because I cant open the Project to begin with

RogerS wrote on 2/19/2024, 8:02 AM

If you remove it from Explorer, VEGAS should just say there's a missing file when it launches the project and ask you to find it. You can ignore that.

I tried this, but with no luck. Im gonna give up on trying to fix the project file and start over without using that .png file

Take another png and give it that same name and try it again?
