vegas windows out of place upon start-up

I just installed Vegas 4 for the first time on my new XP comupter.

I've re-arranged some of the windows (the way I like them) on dual monitors. On my Main monitor (1) I display the program, the other monitor (2) I use to display my video preview and explorer wondows. Problem is:

Whenever I start up Vegas again, the program doesn't remember the way I had the windows displayed when I exit.

What's even worse, most often upon start up, my Video Preview or Explorer window fills up the entire screen of my main monitor (1) to the point where it's so big I can't even re-size it smaller. I then have to (control-alt-delete) to end-task and re-open Vegas. Usually on the second attempt, the Video preview window is a little smaller and I can then resize it and move it over again to monitor (2).

In addition, I seem to have trouble docking/undocking the windows (even with the control key down). Is there a unlock or unsnap type of feature that will let me move windows around freely and remember my settings?

if you could please address both questions. I appreciate your help.

The first problem is a Windows thing. You're making a virtual desktop. So you need to drag what you want to the second monitor each time AFAIK, maybe someone else can verify.

The second problem comes up a lot. That thin vertical line to the left of all the undockable windows is what you grab to undock the window and drag it around. Once it is free it can be moved or resized like any Window's window. To put it back where it was drag of it normal position and it shoulld shrink down by itself.

I don't know what's causing this, but I can confirm that what you want is possible.

I have a Matrox G550 dual head card. I normally just have the Preview and Audio Mixer on the right screen, but after your post I dragged Vegas Explorer over there too, closed down and re-opened - everything was as I left it, as it always is..

Same here. Windows (XP) remembers the custom arrangements for all my programs. Do you have your OS configured properly for a dual display?

I have 2 screens each set at a different resolution. I think that might be causing it to act strange. (It also behaves the same in Acid). However I seem to have better luck when I close those windows out (or re-dock them) befoe exiting the program.

One thing I've noticed is that because my 2nd monitor is set at a higher resolution, the windows appear smaller on monitor 2 than they do on monitor 1. If I move a window back over to monitor 1 it completely engulfs the screen (and then some!).

So when I close out and go to open the program again, the windows I had put in monitor 2 somehow end up on monitor 1 larger than life. I can live with this and move them back over to the other screen, no problem. I just don't understand why the program doesn't remember the custom arrangements. All the windows should be in the same place where I left them.

I'm running hydavision (Radeon 8500). I don't know much about it or it that has anything to do with it or not.

Hey cowmumble,

I've recently purchased a second monitor (both are the same size) and run them with a Radeon 9800. I have the same issue with the windows all collecting back on monitor 1 everytime I close and reopen Vegas.

The ATI Hydravision seems to have an option to remember the window positions for apps, but I think it just means the main program window.

I haven't tried too hard to find the solution yet, hopefully I can figure it out 'cause it's really annoying!

I have a similar annoyance in that V4 always remembers all of the window positions on both of my monitors but whenever I open V4 everything is there except the timeline. To get the timeline I have to double-click the icon in the taskbar.
