VEGAS wishlist

i did a search but didn't see a recent wishlist of improvements to Vegas here... most of my wishes are somewhat trivial, but i'd love it if someone involved with development saw them, so i'll post here just in case...

~

FOLDERS
like they have in Acid, to group tracks and open/close selections quickly.

AUDIO ANALYSER
there arescopes for video, but no RMS/Peak/Phase for audio?!? Vegas started off as an audio app; it seems an obvious tool. (having to use a plug-in for it means u can't monitor what's happening while u adjust EQ or compression... see below)

MULTIPLE FX WINDOWS
it drives me nuts using filters (audio or video) and not being able to see/use more than one at a time.

16BIT FILTERING
In After Effects if you use a plug-in that is only 8bit when operating in 16bit mode you are warned. I've spotted numerous problems using levels in Vegas (according to the videoscopes) where filters are operating in 8bit (razor-stepping of gradents for instance).

IMPORT IMAGE-SEQUENCE
I've had problems with TGA and PNG sequences (the only two image-sequence formats I regularly receive) where a "rip" will appear in the transition from one sequence to another. When rendered, this damaged visual info is passed on to the new file, so it IS something Vegas "sees".

I have seen postings on every Vegas list/forum regarding this, but they are infrequent. To my eye it reminds me of faulty delta-offset info, but I'm no expert in this area, soooo...

EXPORT IMAGE SEQUENCE
I always use After Effects for this as Vegas is slow and has limited choice... plus, given the strangeness of the above, I'm hesitant to use it.... this is a smaller request, given I already have a workflow solution for it.

RGB WAVEFORM VIDEOSCOPE
I do a lot of work outputting to RGB as well as YUV. Having a switch that'd change the IRE / % listings to 0-255 on the waveform scope would be handy.

TRANSITION FX
More please! Particularly...

A collection of ripple-dissolve settings (dissolve to dream / past) is something I have to make myself currently... given some of the (imo) unimportant transition fx provided, something as commonly used as this seems an oversight. I get a fair amount of animated content where this kind of effect is regularly in demand.

ORGANIZED SCRIPTS
I know I know. There's lots out there. That's actually part of the problem... the inclination to wade thru a few hundred of 'em to see what's useful is pretty small. Having a larger collection already organized would be great.

Utility - specific scripts to automate settings of individual parameters in groups (yeh i am aware some of these already exist)
Batch - sub-batching where I can specify within a batch (this file mpeg, that one mp4, etc)
I'm sure there's better uses than the above; but those two categories came to mind)

~

thx for your attention and thx for the great software... really appreciate the "no recompression required" recently added... MXF import is working out great as well... is EXR output in the pipeline sometime?

ps - plz feel free to merge this posting with another if the topic already exists currently.

1] Right DOUBLE Click to Close a Window - I can swamp myself in Windows. Actually, here's the thing: When I recall a WINDOWS Layout it could sweep away all the unwanted windows. Ah! The Control!

2] Latching Motion KeyFrames for Track Motion - like we have latching in Audio.

3] VirginVegas! An option to start the day with a brand new Vegas, without going back to the "open last". Maybe Click+Alt?

4] Open My Graphics Editor like I get with DVDA? Save and have the Graphic appear on the Timeline.

5] Safe Areas and Grids on my external Monitor - loike what I gets with DVDA.

6] Grid Overlay on the Bezier Mask. I'm creating shapes and so on, grids is good for this.

7] Motion Blur at Event Level

I have others . .

"3] VirginVegas! An option to start the day with a brand new Vegas, without going back to the "open last". Maybe Click+Alt"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Grazie: do you mean just a new project when you open Vegas? Cause thats already in preferences: uncheck "automatically open last project on startup"

Some of my thoughts:
1. Better BorisFX plugin. Forums go back and forth over which company as at fault, but I'd just like to see it work!

2. I'd still love DVCProHD intergration with four seperate audio tracks and metadata, but I hear Raylight Ultra is around the corner-maybe it'll fix the last few things.

3. Better slow mo for progressive frames.

Other than that, everything is working well for me, even using DVCPro.

And OT:
Grazie, didn't you once suggest a SCS photoshop? The power of photoshop with the ease of Vegas would be great!
JJKizak wrote on 4/15/2008, 9:14 AM
If you want your ideas to be heard you can contact via the suggestion box. SCS doesn't look here too often. I would like to see automated sub-title tracks created in Vegas (Dragon Speaking) which are manually editable and translation plugins (been around for years) for different languages. Mandatory hardware acceleration (selection menu for different cards) for precise playback no matter what is on the timeline. Playing back video from the timeline is a no-win proposition using software---as the software improves the demands quadruple so it can never catch up with HDV, then AVCHD, then 3D HDV, etc. Regain the rock solid stability of yesteryear. Create a Java application that will automaticcally install any pluggin created by man into Vegas. This would be the stuff that creates legends. Provide free 2 liter Pepsees and pizzas to the prgrammers to make them happy and content.

K? Not my suggestion - eh?

And yes I know the prefs. And mostly it IS this way. But on those few occasions, where I DON'T want it I get to watch my previous day's stuff drag themselves up in front of me. In fact, when I open a NEW instance, not a NEW Project, of Vegas I don't get the previously used come up? See?

How would Vegas create the inter-frames from Prog - for better slomo? Must be that this is already being done in other NLEs? Yes?

When I select a group of pictures in Project Media and right-click->Properties, it would be nice if my changes in that dialog (e.g. Pixel aspect ratio or Alpha channel settings) would apply to ALL of the pictures selected instead of just the first one selected. Right now I have to go one by one by one by one by one by one by one....
Rosebud wrote on 4/15/2008, 9:24 AM
Always the same…

WORKFLOW:
-Overwrite mode
-Track lock button
-Improved Prerender File Management (A simple Ripple should NOT delete Prerender , Add a Video Track should NOT delete prerender… etc).
-A dual preview Window when Trimming Event (not a stretched window)
-Ability to choose attribute when pasting Event Attribute.
-Ability to choose Video & Audio tracks (not necessarily superimposed) when adding clip from Trimmer to Time Line.
-Video Preview when adding FX to clip in Project Media window.
-Add to the Event Pan/Crop window, the loop/move tools of the Track motion window
-Ability to display Markers on ALL Time Line (fx, generated media, pan/crop, track motion)
-Multiple Event Trimming (Like Liquid Edition or FCP)
-Ripple Edit actualy DONT work when “Start, End or Lenght” are changed in Edit Details Windows. Please fix this.
-Ability to enable draw Wave Form & Frame Event SEPARATELY (in preference).
-Add the “Sync Cursor” to generated media
-Add the internal option “Show Unquantized Event Start/End” to the View menu
-Add a “Goto” option in Edit Detail window for Events, Markers and Regions.

VIDEO :
-“Region” Filter (like Edius) to apply effect to only a zone of video (caution: this is not the same thing as Bezier Mask + Filter). Example: This filter allow to blur face with only one video track.
-Individual Photoshop Layer Import (like DVD-A)
-Keyframable compositing mode (Ability to switch to different compositing mode with an envelope)
-Render TIFF or TGA Image Sequence (script is too slow)

AUDIO:
-Audio Event FX (like CD-Architect, this is a very useful feature)
-Velocity envelope for audio.
-Pitch envelope
-Audio out to firewire
kairosmatt wrote on 4/15/2008, 9:30 AM
Ah, Grazie, I see what your saying...I guess I'm just used to leaving that option off-nine times out of ten it drives me crazy! The last five projects come up under file-it would be nice if you could "stick" a couple of projects there, like the start of XP (there's the most recent apps, then above the ones that are always there).

As for better slow mo-I don't know how they do it! I've had a chance to mess around with PPro CS3, and somehow they get better slow mo results. In Vegas there is usually some ghosting and/or wierd smearing thing (my tech description). In fact, the CS3 version does have great DVCProHD and BorisFx intergration.

Of course, I still perfere the Vegas interface though!

Nice list Gilles!

Esp . .
-Ability to display Markers on ALL Time Line (fx, generated media, pan/crop, track motion)

oh yes please!

jeff-beardall wrote on 4/15/2008, 2:32 PM
Audio event FX please. and a way to pan/crop/scale/move video events in the video preview window

Have the VidCap file actually do something (like remember capture directories) for a change.
We've only been asking for this since Vegas was at version 3.0 :-(

1) Elegant crashing. Bad enough the thing crashes, would be nice if it cleaned up it's own mess. Vegas is the ONLY program in years that forces me to do a hard reset.

2) 10bit YUV.

3) DPX I/O

4) Decklink working.

5) Ability to specify where stuff goes in the project.

6) Fix VidCap. Amazing here we are in 2008 and Vegas still cannot capture DV correctly.

7) BWF Export.

8) Audio with TC.

And I haven't even thought hard about that list.

Bob.

robwood wrote on 4/15/2008, 5:44 PM
oh right!

Audio Event FX
10bit YUV
DPX i/o (i could've used that today!)
faster image-sequence render

i'll 2nd those

~

Interesting the differences in requests... that line between compositing and NLE blurs muchly; I'd generally prefer to keep the speed/stability Vegas currently has than fill it with "features" other apps (cough *After Effects*) will always do better.

Regarding crashes; I've experienced them VERY rarely in Vegas over the last 5 years; two (2) crashes resulting in a lock-up and lost data. There is no audio/video app I trust more to make a deadline... probably the reason I'd prefer not to have it wander too far from it's NLE roots. Losing stabiity would definitely lose me.
quoka wrote on 4/15/2008, 7:05 PM

1.- Automatic increment on save option .... I'm so sick of having to manually type in the next number I want to save a .veg to.
(I usually have about 200-300 saves during a project - each with consecutive numbers manually appended)
2.- Vegas to have a memory of where it last saved a particular file type to .... If I save a .veg in one folder, then render a mpeg to another, when I go back to do another .veg save it goes to my mpeg directory.
3. 10 Bit YUV support
4. Decklink fully operating

rs170a wrote on 4/15/2008, 7:44 PM
Automatic increment on save option...

Are you running Vegas Pro 8?
Then grab Edward Troxel's free AutoSave Custom Command.

#1 wish for me is to fix HDV crash problems. Period.

Stability was the reason I switched to Vegas initially and despite how much I enjoy editing in Vegas I'm always nervous when working in HDV now. It is very frustrating to be up against a deadline and not know if Vegas is going to render all the way through for me or not.
Darren Powell wrote on 4/15/2008, 8:39 PM
I agree with michaelshive ... I want stability too ... very scary at the moment having to workaround all time to get chunks of my feature project rendered.

I haven't read every one of the items on the wishlists ... but I would like to see a timer option for the Auto Ripple (CTRL+L) button ...

I often forget to switch it off after one or two critical edits ... I would probably set mine to a 15 second countdown then the Auto Ripple would automatically switches itself off ... until it was called for again.

Mmm can't see it ever happening though.

1. Load all available cores 100% when previewing.

2. Code for the Penryn SSE4 instructions.

Yeah I love Vegas I just want to love it faster.
Darren Powell wrote on 4/15/2008, 11:47 PM
Yeh, I would also like to be able to 'Remove from project and delete files' straight from the clip on the timeline instead of having to 'Select in Project Media list' ...

Just a thought ...

Ha, I've been waiting for this opportunity to get this lot off my desktop :-) Apologies for some "like Premiere" comments but there are things that I still miss!

1. Tabbed projects. Multiple projects in tabs in same window.

2. Copy/cut/paste between projects in a single Vegas window.

3. Display of event length on the event itself during ripple editing (in the meantime thanks to Rosebud for the ShowEventLength custom command).

4. Improved H.264 encoding. Update MainConcept encoder. Vegas version is 2.0.1889 (2006/01/05) (current release is now up to 7.6 or later). Or improve Sony AVC codec.

5. Thumbnails in Explorer window

6. "Filmstrip" view of video files showing multiple frames within the file, like in Scenalyzer.

7. Direct FLV export

8. Direct animated GIF export

9. Direct Xvid export

10. Import FLV

11. Import Xvid (without changing fourcc)

12. Import mpeg elementary streams (.m2v)

11. Improved intelligence in locating offline media

12. Rewire support

13. Improved auto-save including variable increment and show whether auto-saved project or last manual save is more recent when project is reopened (in the meantime thanks to jetdv for excellent AutoSave custom command)

14. Auto-add video events to project media as they are rendered (like image snapshots are added).

15. A way to migrate window layouts between versions

16. Shortcuts to often-used directories in open/save/render etc. windows (like Reason has)

17. Fix support for program stream "HDV" files rendered in Womble

18. Put sfap0 files in a different folder/drive from the vegas project

19. I-frame markers in timeline and trimmer

20. Improved slow motion

21. Advanced deinterlacing and resizing options

22. High mp3 bitrates in DivX renders

23. Scrollable preview window (as per farss thread)

24. Ability to show separate audio plug-in windows (e.g. a VST master meter in a separate window from a track compressor)

25. Description of custom templates to update to what the custom template actually is, not what it was originally based on (very confusing if you're not familiar with Vegas' behaviour).

26. Quick render for a single event. i.e. "Render as" on an event's context menu, allowing the event to be rendered without selecting a timeline selection area and without muting events on other tracks.

27. Display tooltip of the file name when hovering over an event in the timeline (like Premiere)

28. Ability to quickly jump to instances of media from the media pool (from the media's context menu) (as now achieved with Rosebud's gotoevent custom command).

29. Improved MPEG2 encoding speed and quality (c.f. Cinemacraft Encoder Basic)

30. Full screen preview on a single display system like a laptop (Premiere 6 on Win98 had this)

31. Static preview thumnails in the video bus track of how the video will look like rendered.

32. Maintain pitch during audio scrubbing (like Premiere)

33. Audio scrubbing while spinning a Shuttle's inner jog wheel or dragging the cursor by the black line (not the pale blue thingy at the top of it).

Edit:

34. Improved capture program, particularly HDV, with flexible file naming options (like HDVSplit), better scene analysis, option to trim to full GOPs, and repair/reporting of corrupt clips.
Laurence wrote on 4/16/2008, 4:43 AM
My list is much shorter:

1/ Render pause.
2/ Make use of DirectSow instead of VFW.

The other stuff would be nice, but those two things are all I really need.

Oh yeah,
In media manager, I'd love to be able to resolve lots of offline media at once.
For example, when you open a project, and you've moved a folder of media, vegas searches for, finds it, then tells you it found other missing media there.

Why can't MM do this?

And if it can-can someone please tell me how? I moved a bunch of footage off the main harddrive to a back up external and would like to tell MM where the 150 offline files are!
Grazie wrote on 4/16/2008, 7:33 AM
I had the same. Just used "Smart Search" found the lot. SS, is in the "Resolve Offline Media" menu.

Hi Grazie,
Thanks, but I can only get to find one at a time. Is there something I'm missing?
