Vegas workaround: help with multiple files

hackazoid wrote on 12/30/2007, 12:42 AM
Having trouble with Vegas Pro 8 crashing on renders. Got 8 min of a 23 min family video and then got another 3 min but couldn't figure how to add it to the track like I do in Vegas.

Selected the 'compilation' option in new file as the other which I normally use to burn DVDs is for a single movie file.

If I get the last part to render or re-do and it renders would like to stitch them together for a continuous DVD.

Thanks for any help/ideas. This has been a frustrating hassle!

In DVDA you can make a PLAYLIST that includes both videos, and the menu button point to the PLAYLIST.

Alternatively, you can make the END-ACTION of the first clip point to the second clip...

Thanks... Here's what I did:

* Added 2nd video clip to menu in upper left dock area
* In upper right dock area for properties, selected End Action
* Command = Link
* Destination = new video I added
* Dest chapter = default to 1

The 2nd video/sound shows up on timeline and plays fine but when I burn, only the audio for #2 shows up on DVD.

I did the 2nd clip as a .WMV vs the Mpeg2 of #1 as I try to force V8 to generate something for me. Is that an issue?

Any follow-up thoughts. I'm not that familiar the DVDA & am trying to get something to play tonight.

Thanks.

Pretty much as George posted for a playlist or having one title call another as it's end action, you should be able to add video either to the project tree on the left of the DVDA window, or by dragging the video onto the menu. You should also be able to double click on either video to bring it up in time-line view, make sure there's an audio track selected, and preview that title. Usually if there's a problem it'll show up in that time-line view.

If I understand correctly, your finished DVD has audio only for the 2nd clip. I don't think that the wmv format is automatically a problem, especially if you could preview the file in DVDA, but something obviously went wrong -- perhaps something was off in the file or with the direct show filters installed on your system so that the encoder couldn't do it's job? That could also explain Vegas crashing if this was the file you were rendering at the time. There's a chance (probably slight) that the mpg2 DVDA encoded from the winmedia file (wmv) just doesn't agree with your player, so you might try playing it with your PC if you haven't already.

If the wmv file is questionable, what you can do is try to rescue it by encoding it to an intermediate avi format for Vegas or DVDA to deal with, or by rendering to mpg2 using another application. VirtualDub has a plugin available that reads wmv files, and if it opens your clip, will easily resize it if necessary, and encode it to avi -- you will need a compression codec if you don't have one installed already -- I'd suggest mjpeg, huffyuv, or DV but there are other choices available.

If VirtualDub will not read the wmv file, you could try avisynth, using a script that goes something like:
DirectShowSource(filename)
You'll find directions etc at the avisynth.org website where you'd go to download the program. Avisynth would use the software already on your system that lets you view the wmv file to decode it for VirtualDub.

Or there are a few programs that can go from wmv directly to mpg2 if you'd rather. Many of these are just front ends for software like avisynth & henc (an mpg2 encoder) -- some include this software, while other require you to download and install it separately. You can find links to this software at videohelp.com -- virtualdub.org, and as mentioned, avisynth.org.

Many thanks to you and George. I was able to foce Vegas to render it in 3 chunks of Mpeg2 & MS Wave files so no WMV issues.

Tried the menu based approach and have a DVD with 3 clunky menu items that play as I click on them. I guess you can't show all 3 video/audio files on the same timeline like in Vegas editing.

But my attempt via end action to have them play continuously didn't work as it returns to the main menu. I also had a playlist with all 3 but in the set-up process I got a "playlist orphaned' message so messed up there too.

I do have something to show, but curious how to get the continuous play if you have other ideas.

This help is what makes this forum so great. Thanks again.

OK... played with it a bit and got it to work continuously. Some settings on 'end action' didn't take the first time. Also didn't use the 'preview' function to test it.

Thanks again.

If it helps, you can add mpg2 video on one time-line using a composition in DVDA, but don't know that that would have a lot of benefits. Also, if you want to join mpg2 files (combine them into one file), and have the time/inclination to fool with getting your hands dirty so-to-speak ;-) programs like Cuttermaran do work. And for right now, assuming that you might still have those extra buttons hanging around, if you haven't figured out what to do with them yet...

To hide a button make it an image-only type, remove the image if there is one thru properties -- go to your navigation tool while viewing the menu, and remove any links to/from other buttons, so that this button is un-selectable with the remote -- move it out of the way (I like the top corners) and shrink the size as far as you can go (in case of an errant mouse pointer when viewing on PC).
