Vegas9-No video for MP4 but audio is perfect, WHY?

UncutGaming-gSuS wrote on 10/31/2010, 10:39 PM
I have converted M2TS files into MP4 files because the M2TS files always crash my computer when I import them to Vegas.

So I converted them to MP4 because apparently Vegas 9 Movie Studio can edit those files too.

But when I try to move the MP4 files into the time line only the audio time line is filled and nothing shows in the video time line. Even the preview window is blank but I can clearly hear the audio.

What am I missing here?

Here's my laptop spec's;

Dell Inspriron 1501
Windows Version:XP
RAM:2 GB
Processor:AMD Turion(tm) 64 Mobile Technology MK-36
Video Card:ATI Radeon Xpress 1150
Sound Card:idk
Video Capture:Hauppauge HD PVR
CD Burner:
DVD Burner:Philips DVD+-RW SDVD8820

EDIT: I also uinstalled Quick Time 7.6 and installed 7.5 but still no luck.

MP4 is not more stable than M2TS. If you have speed/stability problems with AVCHD, the right way is to use Cineform NeoSCENE's AVI.

I have the same problem with Vegas 10 when I try and move an MP4 file. Audio but no video. I also tried down loading Quicktime 7.6.1 but no luck.

Guys please,
MP4 is a container, not a codec.
Please post your file details as well as your Vegas and Quicktime versions.

MP4 is a container, but 99% of the times it's got h.264 in there. Which means that the Quicktime or MainConcept decoders kick in, which means that they're quite unstable inside Vegas. The best way for this guy to get some peace of mind is to use a real intermediate codec, rather than any delivery codec -- in case M2TS doesn't work, as he claims. So that would mean either Cineform AVI, or Matrox AVI, or Avid DNxHD.

BTW, if the video is coming from the Hauppauge HD PVR and not from a real AVCHD camera, then the problems are to be expected. I heard horror stories about Vegas' incompatibilities with the kind of videos Hauppauge is writing down. Again, an intermediate codec is the way to go here. Or a different video editor.

The Sanyo Xacti cameras output MP4 files with the H.264 codec. How do I convert such an MP4 file to a Cineform or Matrox AVI or an Avid DNxHD file? The software that comes with the camera itself doesn't provide a conversion facility. It only provides a basic video editor to make and burn DVDs (I'm not even sure that it supports HD).

Which version of vegas do you use? If you don't use 10, download the trial, install it in parallel, and test your m2ts files there. See if it's stabler. IF yes, update to Vegas Platinum 10. Otherwise, come back here, and I will get you URLs for intermediate codecs.
