Version 10 update

f1charlie wrote on 9/12/2010, 8:45 AM
The boxed version I have just installed is at build 179. Searching on the web, the latest build appears to be 191.
Clicking on updates via the Sony site appears to take me to the full version. To update my version, do I just install this full version over my existing installation?
What are the changes between the build versions?

1) Yes
2) The changes are listed in the release notes

Thanks for the reply.

The release notes here:

http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/download/updates/moviestudiope

seem to refer to the changes between version 9 and version 10, not between builds of version 10 - or am I missing something?

There is no build 191 fromthe Sony web site. It is build 176.

Where did you see build 191? I wouldn't trust it. Only download updates from the Sony web site.

I went to install the update and got told by Sony that I would have to uninstall the earlier version. So I didn't do either.

Don't worry about the build numbers. They aren't easily shown on the website, and they can be at very different numbers for each of the varieties of the software. All you need to worry about is the title, the version number, and update letter. For example: Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0b. If you have 9.0a installed then 9.0b is a newer update.

Generally removing the older installation is never required. Updates (a to b to c) overwrite the prior update. Version upgrades (8 to 9 to 10) are a new installation and don't affect the installation of the previous version.

Can someone point to the "update" or is this just a hoax? I have found no such update.

No update for v10 yet. Build 179 is the latest (and only for v10).

When there is, it will be in Downloads > Updates.

Before purchasing the boxed version I installed the downloaded version to trial. I know I could have just input the serial key to this to make it the full version, but decided to uninstall and install from disk.
I was sure that the build version on the downloaded version was later than the disk version so did a search and build 191 is listed here:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Video-Editors/Sony-Vegas-Movie-Studio-Platinum.shtml

Thanks for the replies. I'll stick with build 179.

I must have imagined seeing a different build number when I installed the trial!
Now to get to grips with producing my first DVD!

I think MSmart is right about no update for Version 10...but also wrong in that if you go Downloads-Updates-Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10.0. It looks like all the Sony software is in the list. So I guess I downloaded what I had already bought at Staples and not an update? I didn't execute the downloaded file and I assume I can delete it..since it isn't an update. I'll do that later if someone can confirm. So check it out...Downloads-Updates. This page shouldn't exist like that..it should only have updates/patches/fixes for Sony software that people bought and installed especially for dummies like me.

I agree John, I think this is what initially led me down this dead end. The updates link should lead to a page which says 'there are no updates' and not the download page for the full/trial version.
Many of my other software have a menu option within the program to check for updates - that would be even simpler for this fellow dummy.

You are right Charlie(?)...sometimes you are even notified of an update. And it can be easy to do with no uninstalling anything. Firefox is a good example. Not talking about Sony specifically but there are a lot of links to 'Free' apps that are not free. Some of them do sort of clearly state so before you download them..but many do not. That is a sleazy/shameful way to sell a product. John

I agree, it can be confusing that the initial release version is listed in the Updates page. But as Chienworks mentioned, it is the letter designator after the version number indicates the current version.

Comparing Help > About in VMS with what's on the Updates page will let you know if a newer version is available.

But, for the casual user, it can be understood why they would think a newer version is available.

Why would anyone be looking at softpedia.com for updates of Sony Creative Software titles? Stay on this site and look for updates here only.
f1charlie wrote on 9/13/2010, 3:17 PM
It was only because the Sony site gave the impression that there was an update to VMS 10 that I did a search to find out what the latest build was so that I could see whether I should be updating.
I would not download from anywhere other than the Sony site, but if the Sony site made it clearer there would have been no need to go elsewhere for confirmation/confusion!
Fortunately there are those who have the knowledge right here and take the time to put us right!

Top of this page...downloads...updates...Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10..next page where you can download it...there is no letter after 10.0 as in 10.0a. Like I said earlier I apologize for my stupidity thinking this was an update..but look how I got there...via 'updates'. Softpedia? Nobody here I think got so confused by any other than the updates page here.
