Vertical videos turn into landscape orientation when imported in the new update. When I try to correct this using the pan & crop tool, the adjusted clip becomes laggy and doesn't playback smoothly.

Better is to correct this through rightclik in Project Media
@Mustafa-Osama Try right click on the video Properties - Rotation.
Thanks, guys it worked perfectly, but I still wonder why the footage imports in landscape in the first place ?
it does work when you have a few clips, but with a lot of clips I have to do it for each clip manually?
when I used the pan and crop tool I adjusted it for one clip and then copy and paste event attributes for the rest of clips
@Mustafa-Osama If I start filming with my phone at this angle the camera isn't sure whether to choose 9:16 or 16:9
You see the top, although the record button is the correct way for a portrait 9:16 the box at the top says 16:9.

If I hold it up vertically before pressing record it looks like this & even though I pointed it at the ground after pressing record it stays portrait. 9:16.
Here's an easy to to rotate events:
@Mustafa-Osama You don't have to do one at a time. Select all the clips you want to rotate in Project Media, right-click, select Properties at bottom of pop-up menu, set Rotation. All clips that you selected will be rotated.
