VF 2.0c Crashed!! What has the world come to??

Pick wrote on 10/26/2003, 1:40 AM
Something happened to my VF 2.0c - a usually extremely stable, reliable application. When I go to make a movie (print to DV tape), from an existing .avi file (created with VF previously) the Video Capture Application crashes. I get an error message that says that I must restart with the detail text below describing the stack dump. When I click OK, the video capture/DV writer application closes. VF itself stays up and running.
I removed VF and re-installed but the problem persists.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Pick

What have you installed on your system lately? Have you upgraded any other software? (especially software with video codecs like Quicktime, RealMedia, etc.) Did you upgrade any drivers on your system? You probably made some change to your system that broke VideoFactory. Now the trick is finding what broke it.

When you uninstalled and reinstalled did you manually delete the Sonic Foundry\Shared Plug-Ins\ directory? If you didn’t, you may not have gotten a clean reinstall. Because plugins are shared, they may not get uninstalled. If you break a plugin, when you reinstall, VF2 will see that it’s already there and not reinstall it and so you still have a broken plugin. (this happened to me once).

To do a clean reinstall, make sure ALL the Sonic Foundry directories are deleted after the uninstall. If you installed on a drive other than C:, check the C: drive because sometimes the shared directories will go there and you won’t even know it. Then use regedit to delete everything pertaining to Sonic Foundry in the registry. (CAUTION: If you have other Sonic Foundry applications you should uninstall ALL of them first and plan to reinstall all of them after the cleanup) Check both HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software for Sonic Foundry entries.

If you are unfamiliar with regedit, then I would suggest you call Sony support and have them walk you through the process if, in fact, they think its necessary to fix your problem. This is a radical procedure but it was the only one that fixed my problem of VF not recognizing AVI media anymore.

Perhaps someone here from Sony can recognize what’s wrong from your crash dump and you won’t have to go through all this reinstall stuff. Good luck, this is never fun.

Which os are you? I had this on 98se and had to sort out my os and hd's and reinstalled firewire driver.

Have you updated ATI drivers recently and installed DirectX 9? If so, you may be able to fix it by renaming AVBISurf.ax to something like AVBISurf.old. Be prepared to change the name back if you find other problems though!!

Thanks for the ideas JohnnyRoy, Iaz and IanG.
I am running Windows 2000. I have put new software on and updated McAfee. The new software is from a new Kodak Digital Camera that I bought.
I also noticed that VF says that I have an error when I load the .mov files from my digital camera: "An error occured while creating a proxy file for a stream. A stream could not be created." Although VF does not crash, it has a problem reading the audio portions of these .mov files.
I guess this could be related.
I will take this to customer support.

I just started getting the exact same error message. I've been using VideoFactory for over 2 years, and while I've had occasional glitches, the problem has ALWAYS resolved itself in the past when I've turned off the computer for at least 5 minutes and then restarted. This time, the technique isn't working.

I'm wondering if the problem might be caused by a WindowsXP patch that I installed yesterday. With the major virus issues over the past couple of months, I hate to pass up patching XP.

I have a feeling I'm screwed!

I don't know if this is any consolation, but about a month ago I purchased a Leadtek personal video recorder capture card for $48 from NewEgg.com. Not only do you get a real nice TV tuner card with capturing capabilities, but it also came with ULEAD VideoStudio 7 SE DVD. Fortunately, the print-to-tape feature works using VideoStudio. So, I guess from now on, I'll edit my video using Video Factory but output it to tape using VideoStudio. The VideoStudio package will also let you author DVDs. So, if you're looking for a cheap authoring package anyway, this might be a solution to both problems.

Sony Tech Support answered my issue with the following email. Great product and great support!! It solved my problem and has not affected anything else yet.

-------------------------
This is a known issue with some driver versions for the ATI capture card that will cause crashes with most video capture applications.

Go to C:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia\TV\.
Locate the file named "AVBISurf.ax".
Rename the "AVBISurf.bak" file.
Reboot the machine and this should correct the problem.
