.vf files always lost by Vegas!

Hi,

After editing my files I save the .vf file to a location on my desktop.

Every time I later attempt to open the file to work on it further I get an error message stating the file could not be found at that location. I'm offered the option to search for the 'missing' file but it always comes back as not locatable.

The file icon for the .vf file is always exactly where I left it when I navigate to it through explorer so why can't VMS re-open it?

I've lost every project that I've ever done (3 so far) and this is driving me crazy. That's a lot of wasted hours. I've experimented with different locations etc. and no difference is made.

Does anybody have any suggestions before I give up completely on VMS (version 8).

Thanks

Jonathan.

Could it be that the "missing file" message you are getting is actually talking about a missing media file, rather than a missing project (.vf) file?

For example, assume you create a VMS project and use an MP3 song from a flashdrive plugged into your computer's USB port. You then save your project to your desktop when you are done for the day.

The next day when you open the project, however, you don't have the flashdrive plugged in. VMS is looking for this MP3 file, in that location, and will complain about a missing file and will offer to search for it. Same thing can happen with files copied from a CD or DVD, etc.

The VMS project always references the original media files in the location where they were when you brought them into VMS. They are not actually saved in the .vf file. Make sure all the media you are using in the VMS project is copied to your hard drive first.

Thanks Tim.

It's all on the hard drive mate.

I've go three folders: EDITING PROJECTS, RENDERED FILES and CAPTURE.

Within the CAPTURE folder I save the capture files to a sub folder named for the project . No files are on a flash drive or external media. and no capture files have been deleted.

If anybody has a solution I'd really appreciate it. This is a big eneough problem for me that I can't continue to use VMS unless I can get it resolved!

Thanks

Jonathan.

Just as an experiment ... try double-clicking on one of the .vf icons. See if that opens the project in Vegas.

Hi Chienworks,

No I'm afraid it doesn't. I have tried that route, and opening via navigating from 'File Open' in Vegas.

Unfortunately both yield the same result.

My first project this happened on I moved a file to a sub-folder and figured that must have been the cause. But the last two times I've been careful not to move or delete a thing yet it 's still not working.

Cheers

What about right-clicking on the .vf file and choose Open With.... then select Sony Vegas Movie Studio?

Hi there,

Tried that too with same result. But thanks anyway. I've also checked the file paths rigorously. I've never come across anytiing like tis before.

I may have to raise this one with Sony's Tech Support...

Wow, I don't understand what could be going on. VMS has always been bullet proof for me. Don't know what to tell you but I hope you get it figured out.

Thanks. Me too. So many wasted hours!

I assume you're working with a legal copy of VMS? Something may be wrong in the Windows registry. Do you have some aggressive registry cleaning tool, perhaps?
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling VMS. It only takes a couple of minutes, and may offer an instant solution.

Hi Ivan,

I regularly run EasyCleaner from ToniArts but have never run it between saving the .vf file and attempting to reopen it. I've raised this one with Sony and will report back.

Oh and yes it is a legal copy! :-)
