VF with DV videos

Hi,

I am thinking of getting a Firewire PCCard for me to use with VF but I am not sure wheather this is the right move to make. My current Camcorder (Sony TRV240)does have firewire output but I have doubt in the result I will receive like:

1- Current resolution (352x288 pixels) vs DV resolution, anyone know how much?

2- Current capturing time using USB - as long as the tape requires vs DV capturing time, any idea how long it takes to capture 60 mins video in DV and what is the size?

3- Is editing in DV will slows VF down, or during rendering the finish video?

4- Which avi format is the DV captures to? Any issues with VF?

5- Will the resuls of the VCD be more cleaner and sharper than my current VCD?

tks

1 - DV resolution is 720x480.

2 - DV capture time is 1:1, so 60 minutes of video will take 60 minutes to capture.

3 - VideoFactory works natively with DV, so it is the fastest format to edit.

4 - VideoFactory uses DV compressed .AVI files. The compression is actually done in your camera and it is an industry standard format. The firewire card allows you to make a bit-for-bit copy of the file from the tape to your hard drive.

5 - It may be a little better, but keep in mind that VCD resolution is going to be 360x240 no matter what the source video resolution is. Probably the biggest change will be fewer dropped frames. Of course, since firewire capture is a digital copy as compared to USB capture being DV -> analog -> digitize back to AVI, the image quality might be a little sharper because of fewer conversions. The biggest problem with VCD is that it uses low bitrate MPEG files and these are never going to be fantastic regardless of how good the original source is.

Hi,

That really clears it, so in-conclusion, DV is great tool to have, VF can support DV without buying extra module (right?) and VCD will never satisfy my needs. I need to buy a DVD player then, I will put that on my list.

Anyway, excellent reply!! Never thought the day would come. Your reply really help me a lot and so does this forum.

Thanks a million.
