Video Capture!

ReValveiT wrote on 12/16/2001, 3:11 PM
Hi all.

Is it at all possible to use Video Capture 3.0 to capture footage directly from my VCR?.......

That is, I can use the analogue input on my panasonic DV camcorder to input from my VCR, but I would like to capture this through Firewire WITHOUT first recording it to DV tape.....Can Vidio Capture do this? and if not, does anyone know of a program that can?

Thanks in advance.

this is a function of your DV camera, not your software. if your camera can pass throught the signal from analog to it's DV port, then you can capture it with your capture software. just hit play on your VCR and hit CAPTURE with your capture app. if it doesn't work, then check your camera manual to see if it supports pass-through.

Thanks for the reply....

But when I press play on my camcorder, it starts the tape! (obviously)

I don't want to capture the tape, I want to capture the input from my VCR.......

My camcorder DOES pass the VCR signal through the FireWire port. I can see the preview in Windows Movie Maker (that thing in XP) but using VidCap I don't see the preview (Only for a moment, when switching from Capture to Advance Capture) and even if I could, I wouldn't be able to capture it coz when I hit capture, it starts the tape and captures the contents of the tape (which I DON'T want)

Hope you see what I mean....

Thanks for any further help you may have to offer.

You need to turn off DV device control in Preferences.

Yeah, but even then.....

Will I get my VCR picture in the peview window?
If not, they'll be nothing to capture!

I know my camcorder does the DV out pass-through thing, coz I can see the preview in Windows video maker thingy.

Anywayz, I just got Main Concept's MainActor to see if that will do the trick....If not, I'm buggered!

I'll try your advice tonight....not holding too much hope though....I'll let you know how I get on.

Seeya.

I had the same problem and once I turned on the DV device control, it worked.

Not that you want to hear this, but, in my experience, you'd do better to spend the extra time to dub your VHS footage to the DV Cam. I think you'll find that the dubbed footage (for what reason I'm not sure) will have better color saturation. Further, the likelyhood of artifacts will be reduced, and, finally, I believe that SF software will be friendlier to 'pure' DV input than it will be to stuff that is converted through your CamCorder.

I can't tell you why this is so, but it has proven true in my experience (well, I don't pass analog footage from a VCR through my camcorder, but since my camcorder is backwards compatible, I can still play analog 8mm tapes and the signal is converted to DV and sent out via the firewire).

Converted files have given me no end of trouble . . . artifacts, out of sync sound, truncated sound tracks, etc.

Hope this helps.

I have had folks bring me their VHS tapes for editing. I always end up dubbing them to DV tape and then sucking them into VV. DV tape gives me intelligent capture but more than that, the color shift seems to be less extreme then pass through. I am sure if I had a TBC in between I could correct the problem, but this VHS stuff is home stuff so why sweat it.
