Video Capture - IEEE 1394 card

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Laptop with Window 7. The laptop, like most of the new laptops, does not have IEEE1394 port. So Sony Vegas can not capture video from my camcorder (Sony DCR TRV 840). Looks like I have to install a IEEE1394 card on the Laptop. Does anyone have this experience ? Any suggestion or tips on the IEEE 1394 card type, specification etc ?

Virtually any IEEE-1394 card should work. They're extremely standardized.

On thing that is sometimes and issue with Windows 7, however, is that it, by default, might install a FireWire driver that doesn't work all that well. So, if you have trouble with the driver it installs, go to your Device Manager, locate the IEEE-1394 card and set it to install the Legacy Driver instead.

Other than that, the hardest thing is just screwing the card in the slot.

Thanks Steve for your advice. One question - have you experience about IEEE-1394 card installed on USB port ? I see some advertisement of that. If it is OK, then installation is much easier.

Unfortunately, it won't work for video capture. You need to have a true IEEE-1394 port to capture video.

Had same issue with a Lenovo Z560 Ideapad. Purchase a Syba SD-EXPC34-2F TI Chipset 1394a (400Mbps) 2x Ports, 34mm ExpressCard from Amazon, put it in the slot, attached Sony DV camcorder, and downloaded video without any problems.
