video cards

I'm about to buy a complete new pc system and I still can't decide between a card by INVIDIA and the ATI 8500DV? Will Vegas work good with the ATI card? I like all the features they offer but I've noticed many custom pcs built for video editing use INVIDIA. I've decided to get the Creative Labs Audiogy for sound. I use my pc for capturing audio and video, editing and rendering. Any ideas? Thanks.

Don't be too concerned over video card choices for video editing. All you need to run Vegas is a 10 year old 1MB SVGA card. More memory will allow higher resolution, but Vegas won't perform noticeably better with a new fancy card. Almost all the new features of current video cards are for game players and 3D modeling & rendering.

One feature you might really want to consider is dual monitor capability. It can be really helpful to have two monitors to spread out your workspace.

Thanks. The ATI 8500DV video card I'm thinking of getting supports dual monitors. I have my eyes set on a pair of Viewsonic G90fb CRT. Flat panels are way too pricey for me.

I would recommend the Matrox G450 or G550 dual head cards. I you search around DAW forums\newsgroups you will probably see that many insist on Matrox cards for their stability\compatibility and ease of installation. I have a G450 in my old machine and a G550 in my new Athlon dual processor box. Both have been problem free and the dual monitors (2 x Viewsonic G90F's) are really nice with Vegas.

I realize the Radeon is much better for gaming, but I know people have had issues with these cards on my Tyan S2466 M\B and you are using this primarily for DAW work I would assume.
