Can you reproduce this problem in 9.0a?

Yes, confirmed problem. Did it with both 32 and 64 bit 9.0a.
In fact the media did not just disappear but in most cases Vegas crashed totally.

Confirmed all examples. 9a build 704 32 on Vista.

And you don't have to undo back to the Pro type.
To the 3 gen media items I added the a/v, added the a/ , and added a jpeg on track 2 (same track as the gradient)
undo the jpeg and the Gen media in track 1 disappears leaving the gradient and the video on track 2 and the 2 audio tracks on 3

Redo brings them back.

[ed] yes Terry, the media still appears in the timeline, but (whilst crashing) you may not have noticed it disappearing from the project media list.

May be a silly question, but did you try using tracks 2, 3 and 4. Don't put anything on track one. Could it limited to only track one???

I had placed about 10 generated media on the timeline and they all defaulted to "sample media"! That was too funny...but tragic.

Now I'm looking at a titler where I can generate what I want and import it into Vegas. How sad........

Keith should think before he types. xberks post (2 down) will explain.

PS: curiouser and curiouser...
I was just closing some windows on the browser and noticed in the second png posted above:
the JPEG was undone, the checkerboard and protype disappear from the list, BUT also, the now bogus checkerboard event in the time line is displaying the JPEG!

Thanks everyone and especially Keith...
I'll try the "Track one" thing later tonight ...

Kevin -- I tried the idea of leaving "Track One" empty. Doesn't help.
I think what happened is that you forgot to do a "save - close - and reopen".
This problem only shows up after you "save and reopen" a file with Generated media in it.

New Proj
------------------------------------------->> Need to save here -- and reopen.
Add a/v to Tracks 3/4
------------------------------------------- this will not cause a problem. Need two undo's.
Add a/v to Tracks 3/4
------------------- after second undo, problem should occur here.

You're dead right. My bad.

I put a report into SCS on this bug a few hours ago. They responded very quickly with this:

Thank you for contacting Sony Creative Software.
This has been logged as a known issue in the Vegas 9 database, to be fixed in a future update of the software.

I see the UNDO and Gen Media issue has been well documented now in 9.0a. I'm sure SCS is working on this very hard. I've been careful, staying backed up and working around it ( I use a lot of titles) -- if I get TOO bugged I'll fall back to 9.0.

One thing the whole experience of 9.0a has done is point out to me how much better (and safer) it is to work in smaller sections and use nested Veg files. I'm done with 20 minute timelines that have 12 tracks and complicated effects (track motion) etc and 20 minute volume envelopes (with dozens of points) etc. and twenty titles on one track. This does not excuse SCS -- but I can't control SCS (I've done what I can to make them aware of the problems) -- I can choose to adjust to reality and get on with things.

i'm furious about the f**k you tone scs has shown here. a bug this critical deserves a critical and immediate fix, not "we'll fix it real soon now, and include it in our next release."

i've been a vegas user since v1.1, and while i 'll still continue to use vegas, this is the last time i'll automatically buy the vX upgrade.

years ago, as a novice visual basic programmer, i was working on a large project fixing bugs. i'd submit my fixes according to the proper protocol, and was surprised to find that, after other fixes had been done by other programmers, the same problems came back to me to be fixed again. turned out the project manager was spread too thin and had lost his overall view of the project.

this is amateursville. when bugs are fixed, as in 9a, that lead to new bugs it means that the q/c/testing got lost in the shuffle. all functionality needs to be verified to prevent this, not just the bugs fixed. too many programmers, too little oversight, and zero testing.

sad...
dand9959 wrote on 8/10/2009, 2:32 PM
Yeah, I find it unfathomable that the QA test:...

"Place two or more generated media events on a track, then place one or more other events on a separate track, then - without doing a save or save-as -do an UNDO not once, but twice and verify that there is no bug"

...wasn't, like, 1st or 2nd on the list of 500 or so tests that are probably used by the QA dept!!!!

...and then for SCS to have the gall to NOT have an appropriately contrite auto-generated response email that is tailored to the incoming bug report - presumably matched against keywords in the report, the severity or number of reports of the same issue, and - again I'm guessing here - the number of ALL CAPS used in the report to indicate the emotion of the reporter.

I empathize with you and other novice visual basic programmers who are so keenly aware of the simplicity involved in the QA process.

um, er, thanks Paul for all your efforts on this and the good advice, too!
I've a good mind to jam a wad of paper under the 'z' key until this is fixed ;)

Thanks for posting this video, very helpful.

Here's a rundown of other issues that seem to be related that we've experienced:

If you're working on a project, save, close, and open an existing project - sometimes the generated media in the newly opened project will be replaced with generated media from the project open previously. (As long as you quit, re-start, and don't save it's all good).

Generated media in the timeline is replaced randomly with the last clips placed in the timeline. For example, you have 2 solid color generators, you drop some video on the timeilne, do some work, and all of a sudden the 2 solid colors become the 2 clips you dropped on the timeline. Any mask effects or motion/cropping is applied to the new media. Haven't been able to figure out if it's undo related, or just random goofy business...

Random undo issues - i.e. sometimes not actually undoing anything, or not refreshing the pan/crop window accordingly. For example, you screw up a keyframe, hit undo and nothing happens. Go look at the undo history, and it thinks it's gone back to a previous change, but nothing happens. Keep undoing and nothing really seems to happen - this is primarily related to keyframes in pan/crop.

System freezes up when hitting undo (this has actually been an issue since Vegas 7 for us).

Lock up after hitting CTRL-S to save, if you do it too quickly after making a change in the timeline, it will lock up (also been a big since oh - I don't know, Vegas 5). If you change an edit, and Vegas is still redrawing and you hit CTRL-S it will lock up occasionally.

Mike.

I reported a similar bug, probably related. When the generated media is a solid color (anything but the default white), then copy that media in a few other places on the timeline. Save the project then open it again and all but the first generated color are the default white.
mikelinton wrote on 8/13/2009, 8:59 AM
That exactly same thing just happened, although instead of going back to white - it just vanishes... it's still in the timeline, still has pan/crop properties, but no name nothing. You can drag a new piece of generated media on it as a take, it will work, but again when you quit or load embed into a project it's gone again.
