Video editing software for ADVC100

Hello,

I am putting together a mobile video capture-to-CD system using a Dell laptop (3GHz P4, 60 Gb 7200 RPM hard drive, 512 Mb RAM, GeForce FX Go5200 AGP 4x graphics card with 32 Mb RAM, UXGA monitor, built-in IEEE1394, etc.) and a Canopus ADVC100 to convert analog video from a high end video camera that my company makes. Question is... what video editing software should I use?

I want to be able to view live video, capture AVI files, add my company's logo as an overlay, and write the resulting AVI files to CD. Ideally I would be able to add the overlay in real time.

Cost is an issue but it is not the biggest issue. The big issue is the time that it takes to learn the software (the users will be overpaid novices) and the time that it takes to render and write the files.

I have heard that Vegas will work well. Do I need Vegas Video 4.0 or can I get away with Screenblast Movie Studio?

Also, I have heard that it is better to have a dedicated hard drive to stream video to. Is it really necessary? I don't expect to capture more than say 10 minutes of full resolution AVI video at a time.

Thanks in advance!!

With Vegas or Screenblast you won't be able to do the logo in real time but either one of them will work for you, it will just have to render it.

If that is all you want to do is add the "bug" the the corner of the screen there is a very easy way to do it depending on what you are shooting with. If you happen to be using a Canon GL2, you can create the bug in photoshop, save it to the memory card and then have the GL2 automatically record it on everything you shoot. It is actually a really cool, and little known secret for the GL2.

IF you don't have the GL2 you might want to look into the Canopus "Lets Edit" series which can apparently do some Real Time editing and should be able to handle real time for what you want to do. Have a look at them here:
