Video Filter Automation?

Well, I did my first Video project and imported it into DVD Architect and made a DVD. I see I have kind of a steep learning curve coming from the audio background side of Vegas.......at least for authoring DVD's in DVD Architect, editing in Vegas is very simular.

One thing I ran across in Vegas though. The video I shot, was shot outdoors and the lighting went from bright to gradual dark, back to bright as the camera panned. To help compensate for the drastic changes, I wanted to use the Brightness Contrast filter and automate the brightness slider. Does Vegas have Video plugin filters that are automatible like the audio plugins? I couldn't figure out a way to do it, so I split the video up into seperate events and then inserted different brightness/contrast filters to each event.

I don't know if i would call it automation, but you can add keyframes to video filters just as you would to audio filters. I would also suggest using Color Curves instead of Brightness and Contrast, as this preserves the hightlights and shadows, allowing you to correct only the midtones if necessary. With Contrast & Brightness you will often "push" the highlights over the top or the shadows under the bottom, creating washed out or completely black areas.

I haven't done this so bear with me but I believe than you can assign most of the video filters paramaters to automation envelopes. Once you've done that you could use an external control surface to control them. Very neat trick, just surprised control surfaces haven't gotten much attention from the video guys.

Maybe Red's the man to get us started?

Red - for next time, it's best to use manual aperture to stop the auto controls from flaring or closing as you pan.
