i am very new to sony vegas. i bought sony vegas movie studio platinum 10. installed the software successfully. i then uploaded a video footage. initially there was audio on the timeline, but eventually the audio disappeared. i tried to reload the same footage but the problem remains. i have tried some different video files bot there is no solution. i have tried to unstall and reinstall the software but this too has not helped at all.
please help me identify the problem
many thanks

To help we need to know the source of the video. Do you know what format the video is? What codec is used? or at least what camera it was recorded with?

Could it be that you have the sound muted?

the video footage is from canon xl2 and the video was recorded on auto and the frame rate was 50. like i said initially the audio was showing on the time line but i dont know what happened next. i checked all the timeline setting and non is on mute either.

So you see both the video and audio tracks on the timeline? If so, how does the waveform look on the audio track? Does it look like audio is present? That is, not a flat line?

there is no audio track. its only the video track appearing. initially the audio wave appeared when i first loaded the footage, i cant remember what i then clicked to which the audio disappeared. i then reloaded the same footage and there was still no audio. i have tried a different footage taken by the same video camera (canon xl 2) and still no audio track wave is there.
thanks for your help

Did you ungroup the audio track from the video track then delete the audio track? Even if you did, adding the video back to the timeline should show the audio. That is, unless you rendered the video (without the audio) to a new file.

How are you uploading the video from your cam? Do you have it connected via a Firewire cable and use Video Capture (vidcap.exe)?

If you select your video in the Explorer tab, what does it show for Audio at the bottom of the Explorer window? The same info can be found by right clicking on the video in the timeline and choosing Properties and then on the General tab under the Streams heading.

Does the xl2 have a built-in speaker that allows you to play back the tape in the cam and hear the audio during playback? If so, is audio present?

I uploaded the video from the camera to the external drive then onto the vegas timeline. I had played the video before from the camcorder and the sound is ok. The problem started when i was editing the footage. I plit the footage into small portions for intro. I then right clicked the video time line then sellected ungroup so as to remove the audio from some of the clips. It was during this process that i noticed that i had lost the audio wave. I then cleared all the video from the time line so as to start afresh but this time the footage did not have the audio wave. I right clicked the video footage for grouping. the grouping options come out grey. I have tried with different footage the problem still persist.

I will check on the explorer tab as you have advised and update you accordingly.
