Video FX disappears

Here is what I'm trying to do...

1. Find a scene in a long avi file, and hit 's' to split it.
2. Seperate the split apart form each other by dragging the later portions away.
3. Fade out to black on the tail end of the earlier piece, fade up from black at the start of the later piece.
4. I've been inserting a '1' second long solid black backdrop inbetween the two.

Sometimes when I butt up the solid black to the preceeding fade out, by video FX disappears from the video.

Usually when this happens, I undo up to and including the split, move it a little, and try again.

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to this. What is going on???

I think it might be because I'm splitting in-between frame boudries. If I really zoom in on my current position in the file and then make sure the indicator line is on a tick mark, it doesn't seem to cause the problem.

On another note: Is there anyway to pull a video fx on the palette and NOT have the Video Fx dialog window appear?

i can help with the last question.

see options/preferences/general, "show video fx window on drop" and uncheck it.

I'm assuming you're adding a transition rather than a video fx to your 1st clip? If your solid black insert then overlaps it'll create its own cross fade, which might be causing the problem. You could check that snapping is on, so that the insert butts up to the 1st clip, or don't bother adding any transitions, overlap the clips and just use the automatic cross fade. The easiest option would be to leave the gap alone (ie no black insert) and do the fades by dragging the top corners of your clips.
