Video import not synchronizing!

I have Vegas Movie Studio + DVD 6.0. This is my problem: when I import my video, (I think it's MPEG2) it imports incorrectly. More specifically, the video and the audio are out of sync with each other. This is a recurring problem and I cannot find any way to fix it. The audio is sometimes longer then the video, or the video is speeded up while the audio remains at the same speed. But when I open this same file in any other media player, it plays normally. Why would it play in another program, but not in Sony?
Please help!

A really good starting point would be knowing the source of this video. Would also be good if you knew what codec it was using. mpeg-2 import seems to work fine with Vegas 6 and Vegas 7 however I don't have VMS so it might be a bug in VMS although most of the code is identical.
Realistically before we can help you you need to do some homework otherwise we're all just guessing.

Okay, just to let you know (unless you already guessed it) I am totally new to this whole video editing world. I have no idea what codec is. :) The source of the video file is from a DVD I want to edit for my (and my family's) personal viewing.
