I have noticed that video files, in general, play significantly darker on a Windows XP computer than they do on the final DVD as played in the set top player.

I am using an ATI Radeon 7200.

I found this out after I lightened a clip, then it turned out to be too bright on the set top player.

Take a look and see if it's not brighter on the actual TV.

well i dont play the movie on my dvd player,
first i got a .avi of a movie off say a P2P program
i cut a part out of that, saved the cut out part as .avi
then OPENED that cut out part with vegas
added some effects
and saved it
and when i PLAY it on my computer with windows media player, the EDITED cut up is way darker than the original cut up i took from the .avi and also darker than the plain original .avi itself, thats my problem. thx

Of course, you're using Vegas for totally legal purposes, right?

If you're copying a protected video, you probably are having Gain problems.
This will lead to varying levels of luminance and brightness.

the video is not protected, its something to do with the vegas video settings

Hey Matt -
I don't know anything about DIVX so I can't comment on that.
I think, maybe, you should pop back to basics.

1. Redigitze your original footage using Vegas Capture program.
2. Edit in Vegas.
3. Render (default) as a DV.
Everything should look great, and there should not be any differences in video levels.

Then to get a smaller video, do a Render As, MPEG2.

If you are still having problems - check back here.

divx is a POPULAR codec to view all the newest avi's these days

I thought your question was a legitimate one especially since Vegas users do not 'default' to DivX. I think a much more useful (and polite!) response to your post would have been an explanation of DivX i.e. its benefits compared to others, its implementation etc. That would certainly have kept the communication lines open. After all isn't that the purpose of this forum? And to Matt10's query "how can u not know what that is" I say, vicmilt does not have a monopoly on ignorance. I mean, after all, who started this thread?
