Video Licensing Question (Someone want your video)

Hi everyone,

I want to ask if someone here ever experience of selling your videos to a company.

So, in deeper story I learned right now, my cousin just made one interesting video (actually it is shot with cellular phone only, short duration), and she was contacted by someone saying they are interested with her video, for their TV show in UK and ask for her complete video file.

The question she have is, in general, if someone interested on using your video, when they should pay for your video? Do they pay before/after on-air / published ? Or pay half in the front, and half remaining at the end?

The person contacted her said they will only pay after they done final editing.

Should there be any written agreement on this? What should she do?

Since I personally never been dealing with this, so any suggestions / recommendation is welcomed.

Thanks,
Set

Payment terms -- and the amount -- should be spelled out in your contract. Also the contract should include information on serial rights. In other words, do you maintain ownership of the video after it has aired on the program or can the program then sell it to other programs without compensating you.

And oh yeah -- Don't make a deal without a written, signed contract! Unless you don't mind and just want the exposure without compensation.

You need to ask your questions to an IP attorney.
That goes double if the video is worth anything.
Many cities have an artists' cooperative where you can get an initial consultation for free.
