Video Out of Sync

Bit Of Byte wrote on 6/29/2005, 8:11 AM
Hi Team!

I acknowledge that there is probably oodles of stuff on this topic but I need to cut to the chase and drum up some quick hits...

My captured video is in slow motion, is jerky and is obviously out of sync. with the audio.

I am using VIdCap in VEGAS 5.0d.

Can someone please help me troubleshoot this one?

What is causing it and how do I fix it?

were there any dropped frames during capture? There should never be, unless the source tape is in bad shape. What was the start to end path of capture - ie, miniDV camera firewire out to PC firewire in, or if it was a VHS source was it VCR composite out to camcorder AV in passthrough to PC firewire in, etc?

Have you successfully captured before?

(edit) What codec did you capture with? Mine is always listed as Microsoft DV I think (I'm not at my edit boxes today)

Hi.

6 dropped frames.

I copied SVHS onto MiniDV Tape until MiniDV Tape completed it's allocation.

I then played back the MINIDV Tape on the MiniDV Camera - good as gold (no apparent sync probs.).

Then, I used VidCap in Vegas to transfer MIniDV Tape onto PC via via USB - I think.

No - not captured before

Get rid of the USB connection. Capture via FIREWIRE. That will solve a bunch of problems.

hopefully it was firewire. I don't even know if capture via usb is possible in Vegas, but I wouldn't use it if it was. If you are using usb, you may be using usb 1 which is considerably slower than 2. I have no exp. capturing usb so I can't help there.

Tip I picked up here, probably from Spot, is to keep your preview window small so as to use fewer system resources and thus keep dropped frames to a minimum.

If it was captured via USB that could be your problem.

I believe you need to use firewire to correctly capture in Vegas.

The dropped frames could also be contributing to your problem.

Thanks guys!

Yes, I stumbled again...I confirm that it was USB and not Firewire..
Silly duffer I am - I guess I should read the manual first hey... :-(

I shall record again - this time with Firewire and let you guys know outcome...

Just a point of interest however, I get full syncronisation of captured footage (and without and jerky stuff) when I play it in Vidcap - 'Play it to Tape' - but not when I import the file under the Main File Drop down menu item (outside of Vidcap appl.)....

Can anyone explain how this can occur?

What is a DV-pass through?

Great idea M!

Would I lose any quality/dropped frames by doing this?

HI M.

I live in Australia.

I did very much consider buying a Canopus Card but as I was buying a MIniDV Cam at same time, I knew it could do what the Canopus Card...
