What is the source of the video?

Well, this is a shot in the dark, but if you are trying to edit mpg files, they'll bog down you comp because mpg is a VERY processor intensive codec. (in order to display the video it has to decode each frame in 1/30th or 1/60th of a sec. depending on certain variables, Avi's are not nearly as processor intensive as mpeg) So it could be that it's just too much for the processor to handle and you will have to transcode (re-rerender) the video as .avi - there will be quality loss in this process mind you.

What's your processor speed? how much ram do you have? ( these could possibly cause you're problem)

Mind you this is a SHOT IN THE DARK. - the info is correct but the conclusion could be WAY OFF.
