Video preview on main display only?

alessandro-c wrote on 1/14/2017, 5:34 AM

I just assembled my new PC with Windows 10 Pro, i7 6800K, MB AsRock Taichi, 32 GB RAM, 6 GB Radeon R9 390X and two Samsung 4K U24U590D monitors.

My problem is that I can use one of the two monitors for video preview only if it is the one I selected as the main display in Windows.

Do you know if it is normal? With my old PC it was different: I could choose any monitor as a preview device.

Thanks in advance for help

Alessandro

Windows 10 Pro version 1511, Vegas Pro 14.0 build 211, and AMD HD 6970 here.

I have Windows display "2" of 3 set as my main display but I can preview on my display "1".

In VP14 I just noticed that the displays are numbered differently. Number 3 in Vegas is number 1 in Windows.

That is a main issue with Windows, you can't assign a display number and there is no logic how the numbers are assigned. It took me quite a while with trial and error to have the Windows and Vegas display numbers to match, extremely difficult with dual GPUs. There is a discussion on a MS forum and the people from MS just don't understand why this is an issue at all. When I installed my GTX580 back into the system it all got screwed up again and I don't bother with it anymore. There is also an issue whith the Vegas Windows Layout. If I physically unplug my HDTV, the Vegas Window Layout on the secondary monitor is out of place.

Thank you for your answers.

Windows 10 Pro version 1607, Vegas Pro 14.0 build 211 here.

To be more precise, I can use whatever display for preview, but it works only if it's set as main display in Windows (which is different from I was used to, from what Nick Hope has in his PC, and from I think it should be "normal").

Any ideas? Do you think I should open a ticket with Magix?

Thanks again

There is certainly something wrong with your system, I can use any screen as preview regardless which one is the main display. As mentioned, don't get hung up on the screen numbers.

You could perhaps try some different drivers for your graphics card. Different drivers could be available from AMD, Windows Update, or the manufacturer's site.

Also read the FAQ point 25, about .NET Framework. Might be worth a try, but my feeling is that might only be useful for Windows 7.

Another thing you could try if all else fails is connecting monitors via a different type of cable if you can. i.e. DisplayPort instead of HDMI or vice versa.

alessandro-c wrote on 1/15/2017, 9:13 AM

It's not the case of FAQ 25: I use Windows 10 with .NET Framework 4.6.2 already installed, and I see both displays (but only the Windows main display works).

Both monitors are connected via DP cable.

Thank you the same for the answers. I'll open a ticket with Magix.

I doubt the Magix can help you. Can you upload a screen shot of your Windows 10 display properties like Nick did?

Thank you for the answer.

Here are the Windows display properties (it's in Italian, but I think it's possible to understand the meaning):

These are the Vegas preview device preferences:

If I choose display 1 everything works fine, but if I choose display 2:

it simply doesn't work.

It works in the opposite way too: if I chose display 2 as main display in Windows, Vegas preview works in display 2 and not in display 1.

Thanks for the pictures. So when you press "Preview on external monitor" what happens? Does Vegas crash or you just can't see the preview? Have tried to use the default windows layout ALT+D+D? You could also try resetting Vegas to it's default settings by pressing CTRL+SHIFT than launch Vegas until you see a splash screen.

Thank you for your answer.

When the preview display is set to the "other" display (not to the main Windows display) when I press "Preview on external monitor" it happens nothing: no crash, no error messages, nothing at all.

As soon as possible I'll try what you suggest (I'm using another PC, now), but consider that it's a fresh Vegas installation on a fresh assembled PC, so I think it's still in its default windows layout.

Thank you again

Does it identify the monitors correctly? (hit the idenfity button)

That would have been my next question. I can see differences in the monitor numbers between Windows 10 and Vegas. I think what the OP experiences is that Vegas displays the preview window on a monitor that physically doesn't exist put still uses it, hence no crash.

It might be worthwhile to disconnect or even delete all monitors in the device manager, connect only one monitor and restart Windows. Once running, connect the second monitor. This may reset the way Windows identifies the monitors and hopefully the same applies to Vegas. Many users have complained about the inability to access to the way monitors are numbered in the OS. Another issue is that card manufacturer don't tell which port is which number, not even which has priority over which.

The monitors were already correctly identified (Windows display 1 was Vegas display 1, Windows display 2 was Vegas display 2).

I tried what OldSmoke suggested, disconnecting and reconnecting the monitors, but nothing happened.

Thank you the same.

Have you tried lowering the screen resolution or refresh rate or both? I have an AMD card too and I don't face what you are seeing... or not seeing.
