Video render quality?

I have experimented with rendering with different templates including:

MPEG2-DVD NTSC
MPEG-1 VCD
MPEG-2 SVCD
WMV. 3mbps
WMV. 1mbps

I would of thought the DVD template would be the cleanest but I still see many artifacts, especially with the text. This seems not to be the same quality compression you get with a commercial DVD.The WMV.3mbps seems to be the cleanest of all of them. These have only been compared on a computer monitor using Windows Media Player so that may come in to play.

Does anyone have experience with burning DVD's and the quality to expect?

While ultimately the quality of your original footage will be what determines the quality of your MPEG-2 file, you can influence this in a big way by increasing the bitrates used in encoding.

In my opinion the Vegas MPEG encoder works best at bitrates higher than 6 Mbits/sec.
Try modifying the standard DVD template so that your rates are 8(Max), 6(Avg) and 1(Min) and see if you then lose most if not all of the artefacts you are seeing now.

Do not expect however to reach similar standards to those of commercial DVDs, where experts will have handled every stage of the process and will have used lighting, cameras and encoders of a quality (and price) far beyond your pocket.

It's a bit like getting to sing as loud as Pavarotti, but somehow not sounding quite the same..

Does your source file have artifacts to begin with?

Are you displaying the rendered video in Media Player at 2x, fill to window or full screen? If so, probably Media Player at least partially to blame. How does it look at the frame size you rendered at in Media Player (actual size)?
