Very good point. I hadn't though of it.
Since "Kung fu fighting" was a one-hit wonder, he might come looking for some $$$
Well, my Acid 3.0 will be used more (that's what I used for my very short clip).

Later.

Hi Michael,

Actually, I do pay a license feel to use some of these songs, but I'll go back and check the parameters to make sure I'm not infringing. Good point and it makes sure to be sure.

Thanks for the kind words. I don't feel like and expert, but I'm sure having fun learning. This forum has been invaluable to me in that learning process. I am so grateful for all of the help I've received here and even the things I've learned about audio from lurking.

Chienworks, you've gotta get the "comments" section up and running.
Until then I'll just have to congratulate you from here.
Your Nightwalk video is excellent!
As you've seen from my clip (forever humbled by yours), that's the way I'm leaning.
I can't afford a digital camcorder right now, and I've seen the fun I can have with my little old Kodak DC215.
Nice work!!

Myst, aww, shucks *blush*. The only hard part of that was walking 4.6 miles in the middle of the night and having people stare at me when i stopped to take a picture every 12 steps (LOL). All i used for that was a little Polaroid point & shoot digital camera. Fortunately the 48MB memory cartridge can hold about 1200 low-res images. I did go through three sets of AA batteries though!

Yours was great! From a technical standpoint, it was very well done. All the images perfectly aligned like that isn't easy to do. Spend a little more time with it and you'll be making the next "Gumby" cartoon :)

tserface,

Ho do you go about getting permission and paying a license fee?

I've been doing a lot of research about that for the last few days. Previously I though that if I used it only for "showing" once or personal use it didn't matter, but I've since found out different and I'm investigating syncronization licenses to try to figure out how to do it right. For the church use I have a license with CCLI and CVLI to allow for using songs on their list for various purposes (singing, video clips, etc.) For the secular songs, it turns out, that license isn't really valid so technically I'm out of whack on that. I've been reading a lot of stuff on the Harry Fox Agency, ASCAP, and BMI websites and I have a few emails into some people to try to get some questions answered. When I figure anything out I'll be sure to post it here, but right now I think I was out of line using the Alabama song without their permission. I can't "unuse" it at this point, but I guess I can learn for the future.

It also turns out that the copyright laws are a little less strict when using copyrighted materials for display in educational and religious purposes, but that only relates to performance so ripping the track from a CD is not really allowed. This is a tricky area as I'm sure there are literally thousands of people who, like me, assumed this was OK as long as they were not making any $$$ from it.

I've also found lots of Production and Buy-Out music available on the internet and, in fact, VideoMaker magazine had a review of many of these packages in last month's magazine. Still, the canned libraries don't have the same recognition value as the songs do.

This whole process has opened up a can of worms for me, but it has also been the catalyst for some much needed education and I really don't want to infringe on anyone else's rights so I don't mind going down this learning curve.

Anyone else know anything about this subject? I'm really interested and I'm better many others are as well.

Ditto that! I would really like to know, from the experienced videographers out there who are using copyrighted music, how they get permission to use it? I plan on doing a wedding video shoot in a couple months and I was going to use the couples wedding song during some of the scenes.

Here's another can of worms to open. What about music being played in the background. If I'm shooting some of the dancing at the reception, am I in violation of copyright laws if I capture the songs that are playing?

Hey, that's nice. I didn't get to check out all of them yet but I got choked up looking at "In Memory of Lady".

I also had a collie named Lady.

Chienworks, great improvements to your website!

When I click DL, where does the file go?
Chienworks wrote on 4/29/2002, 10:19 AM
Thanks Jon!

Well, at the moment, if you click the DL link the file will just be loaded by your browser and your browser will determine what happens. MSIE 5.0 and higher will probably try to stream it automatically. This is why i suggest right-mouse-button clicking so that you may save the file. I would prefer to have a "Save As" dialog box pop up, but i don't know how to do this for all browsers. If anyone out there knows, i'd certainly appreciate the information. Thanks!

Cheinworks, can you remove my 'Training Day' video? Sorry for the hassle...

I have learned some good techniques from watching the videos on your site, so maybe I'll send a better copy later after I re-do some things... (or is it easier to just upload another video)?

Also, I have a question or two I'd like to e-mail to you (if you don't mind). Can you send me your e-mail address to: joncinmn@hotmail.com

Thanks alot, Jon

Jon, i removed your video from the index but it's still on the drive, so if you want it shown again you won't have to upload it. If you do redo it, please feel free to upload the new version.

works fine ;) but, if you'd rather type less, works too.
