The "2 sheets" ("copy snapshot to clipboard" button) icon just above the preview monitor is exactly for this purpose.

Position cursor on timeline where you want to capture the snapshot. Confirm you have the frame you want in the preview window. Click on the little floppy icon above and to the right of the preview window and it can go either to the clipboard or be saved as a file. For best results you may want to change preview settings to best first.

I note that stills captured in this way result in 320x240 resolution. Will changing to best preview give me higher res?

I think the size of the still will be the size of the preview window. So make your preview window large enough, and the image size will be 720x480.
