Vignette image overlay?

Artbot wrote on 11/14/2002, 1:22 PM
This is probably a very basic thing, but I can't figure out how to easily do this: I have an image that I want to overlay atop another image as a soft-edge vignette (like the iris transition effect), and I want to move it around between fade in & out. I want it to be opaque over the underlying image.

When I try the compositing parent/child link at the left, it creates a mask, which I don't want.

What's the answer?

Thanks.

Richard

I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but I'll take a stab.
- Put your vignette image on a track above your main track. (Don't make it a parent or anything)
- Apply a Cookie Cutter FX to the vignette image. Choose a circle, feather the edges, play with the size. (And make sure you choose to cut out the shape, not everything *but* the shape). Your main track should show through where the vignette image has been cut out.

Is that the effect you want? You should be able to use keyframes to move it around and change the size of the "iris".

That's close, but I want the bg image to remain fully visible. Here's a sample image of the composite I want:

The cookie cutter has the right look and controls, but it masks out the bg, which I don't want it to do.

The slider on the left side of the tracks will adjust opacity.

Oops, sorry - this works fine. I had the parent/child connector turned on still...d'oh!

Thanks for the tutorials tip, but isn't "sharing and helping each other in using VV3c" what I'm doing here? I'm not sure what you mean. Did you think this was a non-VV3 question?
