Vision Series - Convert to PAL ?

I've just received my Vision Series CDs - Thanks SoFo.

They are all NTSC res. I work primarily in PAL.

Does the following make sense ?

It appears to me that I can include some of these clips in my PAL projects, and when doing the final render to mpeg2 suffer the performance hit or...

Load them up individually and re-render them at PAL res / frame rate in PAL DV format, for subsequent use and only suffer the extreme performance hit once.

Will I lose much quality the second way ?

jr

Both of those methods would be equal quality. The second has one more trip through the codec, but the quality loss would be negligible, and the clips would be faster in the project you use them in.

Since those clips are 30p (not 60i), you might also consider slowing them down to 25p, by stretching them (use a technique similar to the 24p/25p conversion in the 24p whitepaper. They would play 16% slower, but most of them are abstract enough that it wouldn't be an issue. Or, for that matter, speed them up to 50i if that works better for your purposes. Just leaving them at 30p will work fine as well. Experiment with the "resample" switch to see which look fits your project the best.
