Vista 64

I have been limping along on a frankenputer that was failing every time I turned around. Thanks to Manny at Vasst I have migrated to more reliable, albeit still low power (notebook) system over the past few days.

I wanted to be prepared to to work with the 64 bit Vegas when it comes out, but folks have had a lot of trouble with Vista 64 bit migration. It appears to me that 90% of the issues were drivers for the new system and compatibility issues. That is why I chose to get a notebook with Vista 64 pre-installed; let the manufacturer fight with driver issues.

My assumption of the problems appears to have been at least somewhat valid. I am running Vegas and all of my other software very nicely without crash etc on Vista 64 at this point. No stability or misbehavior at all.

Just something to think about. Having all the hardware arrive fully compatible and checked out by the manufacturer seems to have paid off, even though I did not get a screaming machine in the process. Stable or smoking ? hmmmm

I've been using Vista 64 (ultimate) for at least 3 months now an am quite satisfied. I had minor driver problems with my sound card (creative x-fi elite pro), but that has been taken care of.

It takes a few weeks to get the added security set up and customized for the individual liking, but other than that it has been smooth sailing and I'm pretty much done with XP.

I've been running Vista 64 HP for almost a year now. Still dual boot with Win XP - just in case. Everything seems to be working fine now. Had to wait nine months for my Vista scanner drivers. Of course, every software manufacturer says Vista 64 is unsupported, so if you do have problems, you are on your own. I couldn't install XP 64 on my desktop PC for some reason - it would crash after second boot up, hence Vista 64.

I did upgrade from 2GB to 4GB of memory - this is really needed if you plan to have Vegas, Photoshop, After Efffects, etc. all loaded up at the same time.

There are some nifty things included with Vista. When I first installed my new memory, I got crashes. Vista includes a memory checker, which when I ran, I isolated the offensive memory module. Got that replaced, and testing passed - no problems since.

I had to install Firefox, as there is a known incompatibility between IE7, Flash and Quicktime. Firefox has no issues and is the recommended workaround - go figure.

The added security is a pain, but you get used to it after a while.

All in all, I am pretty happy with Vista 64 and I get to use all 4GB of memory. Next time I buy a computer, I will probably go for 8GB.
