Vista 64 bit system

I just upgraded to a HP dv9920 running Vista Home Premium 64. I also upgraded from VMS 8 to 9.0b. The processor is the AMD Turion X2 64 and there is 4gb of ram.
The hd is a WD250 gb and I added a Fujitsu 250 gb second drive for video capture. The problem is that I can not get either video to capture to that second drive. Both SD and HD will capture to a folder on the first drive with no problem from both the camcorder and the deck (HDR-FX7 and GV-HD700). As usual, after buying the computer and the new VMS9, I see a statement on the Sony support site that they do no support the 64 bit system. But everything but that second drive works fine. I have tried to make sure all the settings are the same on both drives but I must be missing some thing. DOoes anyone have any ideas?

Nope, this is a mystery to me. I use Vegas Pro 32bit on Vista64, and I was able to capture HDV on my second drive, F:\, just fine earlier yesterday. Both my drives are NTFS. Lots of Vegas Pro's innards are the same as Platinum 9's so I would have expect it to work fine. Make sure your second drive is NTFS and you have all the permissions.

Your first statement is encouraging. At least I don't think that I am expecting too much. I was surprised to read that Sony says they do not support 64bit systems. But the fact that it works fine on the first drive and all the editing functions work fine leads me to believe there is hope. HP support was worthless as they just put it off on Sony or the fact that I installed the second drive myself. I have a support ticket pending with Sony. So I will just sit on it and see what they come up with. By the way, it is formatted NTFS but as far as the permissions are concerned, I still have not figured out how to check that in Vista.

I am not impressed with Sony's lack of professionalism. The system requirements for the Vegas products say that XP (SP2) or Vista is a requirement. Not mention is made here of 64bit vs 32bit. Now that I have purchased the software as a download I cannot return it and it doesn't work on Vista 64bit. After playing a video in the preview window it crashes every time. Thanks for the warning... and I was so close to going with Adobe but I thought I would upgrade my existing Sony product instead. Back to Adobe it is.

Just an FYI,

The preview crashes after I hit a certain memory limit. So if I up the limit to 512MB then I can play about 4 minutes of video. If I reduce the preview memory limit to 256 then I only get about 2 minutes. Sounds like a memory leak. Unfortunately I can't really preview any larger video due to memory constraints.

Also note that all my media sits on an external usb 2.0 harddrive. I never had problems with this in the 7.0 version on XP.

These are all problems they need to addressed. This new computer has 4gb of ram installed but VMS9 only says that 1gb is available . I tried setting that to 1gb to see if it would effect the capture problem on the second drive to no avail. In fairness to Sony, however, I have the same capture problems when trying to use Windows Movie Maker that HP installs on the computer. HP won't help me with that either. I am drafting a help request to MS to see if I can get a line on this drive issue.
My next effort is going to be with an external IEEE1394 external drive. That always worked in my previous laptop with XP and VMS 8.

Kent, do not confuse the "prerender RAM preview" specific thingie and Vegas' own RAM usage. The preview RAM only goes up to 1 GB no matter what PC you got. Vegas 32bit will use 3 GBs of RAM maximum, so don't confuse these two things.

Thanks for making that clear. My capture problems on the secondary drive seem to act like a buffer is filling up as the capture just stops. It does not stop the tape device as it just keeps on going until I stop it manually. I also find the same behavior on the secondary drive when using Windows Movie Maker. Now I don't know if the problem belongs to Sony or not.
