VMS 17 Crashes on rendering

kyleknapp wrote on 8/8/2020, 3:31 PM

I just upgraded from VMS 16 to 17. At first I couldn't load any project files created in 16, it crashed immediately on loading. I disabled GPU acceleration, and that fixed the problem.

So now I can open, edit, and preview without any problem. But I can't render. Choosing "Render As..." from the Project drop-down menu causes an immediate crash (followed by the "Send error report" dialog box). If I click "Make Movie" from the Dashboard, I can select "Save to Hard Drive". But then it crashes when I click "Advanced options"

I tried these suggestions I found in the forum:

  • disabling GPU acceleration
  • disabling So4compoundplug, and
  • setting Dynamic RAM Preview max to zero

My computer setup:

  • Windows 10
  • Intel Core i5 2400
  • Intel HD Graphics (on the motherboard)
  • 16 GM RAM

Did you look on the specifications needed for VMS17?

I checked the system requirements here:
https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/vegas-movie-studio/specifications/

As far as I can tell, my system meets or exceeds all requirements. I know my onboard graphics aren't optimal, but I don't see any reason it would cause this problem.

Update: I've found that I can render if, instead of clicking "Advanced Options" on the "Make Movie - Save to Hard Drive" screen, I check "MP4" and then "Next". It works, but it's slower, and the resulting filesize is larger (due to rendering at 1080p rather than 720p), and of course I don't have access to template options.

When using the MP4 render wizard, VMS automatically uses a rendertemplate depending on project settings and available/supported hardware (GPU). When no supported hardware is available, the normal mainconcept AVC codec is used, which is quite slow. When your render should be 720p instead of 1080p than set your project settings first to 720p before starting the render.

Thanks, I'll try that. But it doesn't explain or solve the crashes.

In VMS16, I rendered using the MAGIX AVC/AAC MP4 format, and
Internet HD 720p 29.97 fps (Intel QSV) template. Why would it not allow me to choose this template (or any template) in VMS17?

I have the same specifications on my pc and the same problem when trying to render. In version 16 I used advanced settings, Quicktime and rendered to Avid DnxHD files without any problems. The reason I do this because I like to user other packages like Avid and Resolve.

I thought this export setting might be the problem with version 17 so I deleted these settings and deactivated Quicktime, leaving me unable to open my movfiles in DnxHD format for the time being. In addition I also did the usual things with regard to gpu rendering etc. The problem still persists.

  • The program crashes when I use the Make Movie/Save it to my hard drive/advanced settings.
  • The program crashes when I use Project/Render AS
  • The program crashes when I use Tools/Render to new track
  • The program crashes when I use Tools/Selectively Prerender Video

All these options use some variant of the 'Render As' window. And the program crasheswhen trying to open the window, not when I try to actually do any sort of rendering. This tells me there is something wrong in the code that fills the listboxes in the 'Render As' window.

I tried to take this up with Vegas Support and I got a reply yesterday saying that my computer is too old. Instead of addressing the problem, they say it is just my computer. Well, that is too easy.

I see the same thing here in this tread. Instead of addressing the problem, you blame the guys computer. I will reinstall my Avid drivers on use it on version 16, and see what else I can use version 17 for.

But Vegas has most likely lost a future customer in me.

Well, this is disappointing...

Yeah, sounds like my exact same problem. I'm sorry I upgraded..

Upgraded to a PCIe sound card. Seems to have fixed the problem.
I found an MSI GeForce GT 710 on Amazon for $55

My Vegas 17 or 18 crashes right away when I try to render my project. This is not funny, my clients are waiting for their video. I am getting message about kernel issue. I had Vegas 10 before upgrade to 17. Everything was working well. Problem is I got rid of ver. 10 and now I have nothing that works. If I have any luck to get rendering started (please do not ask me how it starts, it does occasionally) then it never gets done completely. I am getting message "Vegas stopped due to unknown error". I am seriously panicking right now since there is no communication with technical support. Anybody had similar problems? Help me PLEASE.

Regards

@Dariusz-Goraczynski You are obviously using Vegas Pro but you've posted in a Movie Studio thread. Suggest you post in the Vegas Pro section https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/vegas-pro-forum/
