Latest nVidia Studio Drivers v442.92

GeForce GTX 1080

Have reported this before but now if I get no resolution then I want a refund and I'll roll back to Movie Studio Platinum 16

This crashes constantly, mostly when trying to render video. Was rendering to AVHCD as I have done since v13, but the 'guru' here said it may be an issue (though NEVER an issue in 12, 14, 15 or 16 so it's v17 that's the issue here). Have now tried to convert to MP4 as advised however it randomly freezes when rendering E.g. Has frozen at 2%, 3%, 5%, 20% and even at 98%. Time rendering keeps counting up however ETA drops to zero and it never finishes. When I try to cancel it, it says the render will be stopped, am I sure but even when you click to cancel, it just gives a spinning wheel and dies.

The other time it crashes is when editing timelines E.g. splitting a file. Happened four times last night on a 21 minute video.

Please get this fixed or offer a refund as currently this is not fit for purpose.

Everything is default as installed by the software. None of the three options are ticked.

j-v wrote on 5/27/2020, 2:37 PM

But the software did at the installation not know what type of files you are going to use.
In your first post you used a .mov file and now qt. Try it to select that option and read in the Help why is is not standard selected

All files are off a £1000 Nikon Z50 saved in .mov format. Don't use QT files and never have so don't lnow why it's reporting anything else

ALL files used in ALL projects are .mov for better image quality.

Couple things to try...

  • Turn off GPU processing in the Video preferences. This was off by default in VMS 16. If you are having problems in VMS 17, this might be the issue on your system.
  • Turn off Hardward decoding in the File I/O preferences.

I tried everything you gave me to do and nothing helped, so what more can I do? You must understand how damn frustrated I am as a long-term user to upgrade to the latest version and have it crash constantly where the ONLY change to my setup has been the new version of the software?

VEGASDerek

Turning off GPU processing allowed me to encode the video from start to finish fine, however trebled the time it took to encode. One of the factors for upgrading was the reduced encodeing time so not ideal turning off the GPU encoding or hardware decoding. This is more a work-around rather than a fix to the issue is it not ?

KenB wrote on 5/28/2020, 2:43 AM

Instead of disabling GPU, try setting Dynamic RAM Preview Max to 0 in the Preferences Video tab.

Neither of the options I suggested had anything specifically to do with encoding. The first preference is for video processing...mostly of the preview display and some video fx. The second is for reading of files.

Hardware encoding requires you to select a render template specific for the hardware you want to encode with from the RenderAs dialog.

VEGASDerek

Ah, my bad. I have re-enabled GPU Processing and disabled the Hardware decoding.

KenB

I've set the Dynamic RAM Preview Max to 0

Trying to render the movie again to see how it goes. Will report back in a bit

PuddyTat wrote on 5/28/2020, 3:12 PM

Can report that encoding to MP4 seems stable, however AVHCD fails every time. This is the format I have been using since Studio 13 so not sure why this has failed so spectacularly. I have tried this with QT support enabled and disabled and makes no difference, though encoding failed at 34% each time.
