VMS 9 - audio synch problem

califdon wrote on 9/21/2013, 1:49 PM
First, I know it's an old version, but I'm running XP and I only make an average of one movie a year, so I'm not going to get a new computer, a new OS, or a new version of VMS.

I took an hour and a half of video at an Open House for a new theater pipe organ installation and have edited it and need to create an .flv version for posting on a website.

When I view the project in VMS video editor, it is IN synch (I have close-ups where it you can clearly see the keys being depressed and hear the notes, and they are in perfect synch. But when I render to .wmv (as an intermediate format, to be converted by other software to .flv), the audio LAGS the video by a quarter to a half a second in the .wmv (and of course, the subsequent .flv). It is quite noticeable in the close-ups. I've gone back to the VMS project and it is fine there, but when I render it again, the lag appears.

I tried to correct it in the editor by moving the audio in the timeline, but it is locked to the video and I haven't found a way to unlock it.

Any help will be appreciated!

This doesn't fix the underlying cause, but to ungroup audio and video, right click the video clip in the timeline and got to group>ungroup. That is also 'u' shortcut.

You don't "need" wmv->flv conversion to put on a website. AVC/MP4 works just fine with all modern Flash based players.

I will look into that! Thanks.

Thanks for the tip, but it doesn't seem to work for me. I select the audio segment and right click and see "Group" and click on "Remove" but nothing seems to change. If I try to adjust the audio track's position, the video moves with it.

1. Select both the audio and video stream.
2. Press "U"
3. --or-- Click "Ignore Event Grouping."

"1. Select both the audio and video stream.

3. --or-- Click "Ignore Event Grouping.""

This is VMS 9. I have tried that dozens of times now. I can select both tracks and when I press "U" the only thing that happens is that the next time I select either one and rightclick, and click on Group, all choices are disabled except "New". But when I try to adjust one of them, both move!

I have been unable to find "Ignore Event Grouping" - where would that be?

Your toolbar. See the help function. Type 'grouping events' into the help search. It will pull up instructions.

If they are still selected, you will not be able to move them independently.
Deselect the ungrouped events, and drag the one you want!

The interactive tutorials that came with the program will be a huge help to you, because you get to "try" everything, in a logical order. Best.

Thanks to you both. I will try that.

EDIT:
Thank you, thank you! Yes, that was my problem, I neglected to deselect the video track, so that I could move the audio track independently! Dumb of me not to notice that they were both still selected. I then was able to easily move just the audio track.

First the good news:
I discovered what I was doing wrong that prevented me from sliding the audio track independent of the video track: I had inadvertently set RIPPLING on. Once I realized that, and turned it off, temporarily, I can easily slide the audio independently.

Now the bad news:
Now I can precisely align the video and audio, with a sort of clapper board technique, using a couple of very distinct video events (close-up of the organ keyboard that shows exactly when the artist plays a particular note or chord). In the VMS preview, I can get it down the exact frame! But when I render it, it's still off by 1/4 or 1/2 second!

And you are playing your rendered file in what player?
Does it play in sync in VLC?
