VMS10 or Vegas 10?

I have fairly basic editing needs (mostly dissolves and some text... nothing complex at all). I have Vegas 8 and DVD 4 (early versions). I just purchased a Sony AX-2000 which shoots AVCHD... a format I've never used before... I'm brand new to HD. I really don't want to shell out $600 for Vegas Pro 10 if I don't ever use the high-end functionality. So, I was considering Vegas Movie Studio 10 since Sony promotes it as supporting AVCHD editing.

After reviewing the Vegas product comparisons, its seems to me that the only thing I will miss by not going pro is '32-bit float video processing' (there is no support in VMS10). I have 64-bit Windows 7 running from an i7 2.67 GHz with 6 gigs of RAM. Do I need '32-bit float video processing' from Pro with AVCHD editing?

I have been reading some nightmare stories about AVCHD footage and editing on Vegas... I'll get back to you all if I have any problems... but at this stage, I was wondering if all you great minds out there think I will be successful editing AVCHD footage on VMS10 rather than Pro. Keep in mind, I'm a basic editor... nothing fancy smancy (tragic, I know).

Thanks for any and all insights into my query... and I'd love to hear some good news about Vegas and AVCHD!

Dave

Since you already have Vegas Pro 8 you can save considerable money purchasing the upgrade version to 10, I believe the current upgrade price is $239.00, and if I remember correctly sony was offering an additional 20% off any software purchase, so contact sony and see what deal they will give you..Besides since you spent a little over 3 grand for your AX2000 camera don't limit your editing options and creativity with the basic studio version... By the way congrats on your AX2000 purchase, I have the same cam and simply love it.....

I was using vmsp when I recently upgraded to a camera that shot AVCHD with a system similar to yours and I did have trouble with that file type. I found this forum site and a simple fix which involves some minor IT on my part and I had no more problems. It’s a great program and is very close to pro...better than any consumer program hands down.

Here are a couple for edits I did a few months ago with AVCHD and vmsp...

Weldon... very nice videos! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comments regarding the upgrade. I probably will eventually go with Pro 10...but am really curious if the 32-bit floating point editing is necessary with AVCHD files.

Also... does VMS10 use all 6 of my gigs of RAM?

Thanks...

Hold the phone! I've made my decision... VMS does NOT have velocity envelopes. DEAL BREAKER! I know I can slomo video in VMS, but not with envelopes, which is a must. OK... Vegas Pro 10 for me!

BTW... I will be back asking about AVCHD editing... and outputting to high quality.

Hi CVM:

I recently upgraded from VMS 9 to Pro 10 and I LOVE it. I too am a basic editor . . . slowly learning how to use the features of Pro as well as learning how to wring the best performance out of my camera : )

I really enjoyed editing with VMS 9 and, for me, Pro 10 is just what I need to expand my skills.

If you haven't made the buy yet, be sure to look at the "My Account/My Software" page. That will show you the upgrade price which you will not see if you choose the "buy it now" button on the "Software" page.
