VMS15 not using NVENC

Just as a test I placed a .mts file from my Sony camcorder which has 5.1 audio. NO editing just went directly to Create Movie and chose the new Magix Codec -- internet 1080p 29.97fps NVENC. Then just clicked render.

I ran GPUZ to check the GPU utilization. The GPU core clock did max out, BUT GPU load never went over 8-10% and the Video Engine load was 0%.

Other apps I have used that 'claim' NVENC utilization at least showed some usage of the video engine. From my point of view, VMS15 is false advertising as it is not utilizing the Nvidia GPU more.

Intel i7 4770k with GTX1060 3GB VRAM.

My second complaint is no 5.1 audio in any of the MP4 templates and the Bluray template have no audio at all. Really? Why would I create a Bluray file to my hard drive with no audio?

"Why would I create a Bluray file to my hard drive with no audio?"

By design, Blu-ray discs usually have multiple audio streams for different languages, formats or commentary. Authoring software such as DVD Architect allow you to add those audio streams as separate elementary streams (audio with no video). It's a good thing.

I'd be interested in the details of how they're implementing NVENC, too. Using ffmpeg with nvenc_h264 -preset hq (which is what preset it sounds like the Magix AVC codec is using) runs the Video Encode engine up to ~60% on my GTX 1060, with a speed ratio of ~5:1. The Magix codec uses ~15% according to Task Manager (and 0% according to GPU-Z) and runs at about 1.5:1.

Similar to my results. Magix codec is 'using' the GPU, but is not using the video engine of the nVidia GPU. Render could be much faster if they rewrote their codec to utilize it.

Hmmmm. My GPU just loafs about like a lazy dog with VMS 14. I was hoping for better utilization on VMS 15, so this is disappointing to hear.

Could I / should I expect better utilization with Vegas Pro?

I did create a short video last night using a NVENC rendering option last night. For the first time ever it seemed like my GPU was really helping out with the rendering though it never went above 18% utilization, but some of the load was clearly being taken off my CPU. What a revelation!

I’m anxious to try it on a longer project to see how much speed gain there is (if any).
