VMSP 9b Hangs While Rendering Best Quality

I'm new to VMS Platinum 9b and to this forum.

Though I've figured out most of how to set up projects, I'm having trouble with rendering my NTSC DV (720 x 480) projects using Best quality (save to hard drive), Burn to DVD, or Highest quality (when uploading to You Tube. The VMS software will render for awhile, but hang before something like 50% complete. Sometimes I get an unrecoverable error window and VMS program closes.

So far, rendering any size NTSC DV movie in Good or Normal quality works every time and is tolerant of anything I do in the background. But once that’s finished, I can tell that the quality is not as good as it could be. Also, I've experimented with rendering a 22 sec loop region in Best quality and that worked just fine. So I think the Best / Highest quality rendering is choking on larger file sizes.

I have a 2.8 G processor 2 G RAM and am running everything from the C drive with Windows XP. I have antivirus software running in the background, but nothing else.

Seems like it's not a prob with VMS software, but rather a problem with settings on my PC. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Tom

Hm, a wild guess, but try this: use a usb memory stick and render your file to that 'external drive' instead of to the c drive. (This will relieve the work your c drive has to do and will make rendering a bit faster, and perhaps unload some of the memory).

After experiencing the same issues, I found I had to reduce the maximum number of rendering threads to 1. After that it finished rendering without crashing.

Thanks for the input. I'll try these suggestions.

Nope. Neither of these suggestions worked. Funny thing is that VMSP will render and save to best quality about half my project before it hangs. I can then watch the first half of my movie. Both video and audio are great. Too bad I can't get VMSP to render the whole thing.

Any more suggestions?

Thanks, TNJ

Check if there's a corrupted video file at the point where it hangs. Go offline and turn off the antivirus, do all PC housekeeping.

Right clik on the XP Task Bar, go Task Manager > Processes > VMSP > Set Priority > High.

Cheers.
